Stupid tranny cooler

Awhile ago I got myself one of those Mr Transmission tranny coolers. I finally decided to install it recently.

Only problem is, the damn fitting doesn't fit correctly!

You have to attach one fitting to the cooler in the rad where it is, and one too the cooling line going back to the transmission. The fitting that goes on that line doesn't fit. Its the right thread and all... its just the stock cooler line has this weird nut on it that requires something much deeper to screw into.

Anyone go through this with a tranny cooler before?

I've been everywhere from Canadian Pifpaf to the Fastener Center, no one has a fitting that will solve my problem.

Try FORD or the wrecking yard.

It is the barb fitting that attaches to the tranny cooler line, which is the return line to the transmission. Make any sense?

You have 2 cooler lines between your transmission and your cooler (the one that is built into the radiatior). One line delivers hot tranny fluid to the cooler. The other returns the cooler tranny fluid back to the tranny. The return line is the place where we are supposed to tap into it.

So, the kit gives you 2 compression fittings. Both are threaded on one end (one male, one female) and barbed on the other end (so you can attach a hose).

Now, the barbed male fitting that attaches to the cooler in the radiator, fits OK. The barbed fitting that attaches to the cooler line, does not. It appears to need a much deeper socket to connect.

Here is a picture of the fitting I'm talking about. This isn't the actual fitting -- in fact the real one has a female connector, not a male connector like this one. But the picture gives you some idea of what I'm talking about. With mine, the female connector is not deep enough.

I did the installation of my cooler but i left the connection to my dealer but i stood right beside the tech. I installed a B&M 24000. The male connection in the kit wasnt long enough to connect in the factory rad. It looks ok but when i started the engine it leaked a little bit. Had to change that one. As for the connection to the return line, he cut the factory connection leaving only the metal tube and got rid at the same time of the 90* elbow. He than made a lip in the tube to be able to hold the rubber hose and tighten everything with métal collar ( dont know if i spell it right).
Hope it will help. I ll try to take some shots tonight and post it tomorrow.

Thanks speed, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Picture would be greatly appreciated. Also good to know while that other fitting seems to fit, its probably going to leak!

Here in Calgary we have a store called Fairview Fittings. They supply Plumbing Industry with 1000's of different Specialty fittings. You may have a similar store where you live. Do you guys have a store called Wolseley Commercail Plumbing Supplier there. they would Know if such a place exists.
Or any Commercial Plumbing Supplier

I've been doing the rounds at hardware stores and haven't come up with anything. I even went to a big local place where most of their business is fasteners and plumbing. Nothing there either.

I'm going to take one last shot and try contacting someone knowledgable that I know at a local Ford dealer. If that doesn't work, I'll have to go the same route speed545 did. I know someone with a flaring kit so it shouldn't be too bad.

edit: as a side note, the Mr Transmission tranny cooler, the Tru-cool tranny cooler and the B&M tranny cooler are all the same cooler, manufactured by Long, a Canadian company. I haven't been able to find any contact info on Long yet.

Ok zoma,
Took some shots but it s not an easy place to go
Had to remove PS reservoir.
The tech cut the tube and kept the elbow going in the rad to be able to connect it to the feeding line of the tranny cooler. He flared it and tighten the hose to it with collar. Remember that he first used a connection provided in the kit but was leaking. That s why he used the elbow.
For the return line, he used a connection in the kit. You can see it clearly in the pictures. He had to remove plastic protection paint on the tube before.

So to do your job, you ll only need something to flare the tubes i guess.
Also picture of the tranny installed on the car.
Sorry i dont have clear picture of the connection to the rad cause it s a bit difficult to get there.

edit: I also read somewhere that you can just push the nut on the return line (the damn tube) and insert the rubber hose on the OEM connection and secure it with a collar. In that case, you dont have to cut the metal tube, just remove it from the rad. Still have to be careful with the new connection on the rad where mine was leaking.

YES we have a "WOLSELEY "something store that is related to plumbing. JIM, it's 7 minutes from my house , exacly where the meets of the GATINEAU stangs take place.

New update. I couldn't get to that plumbing store as it closes damn early. I did end up at both Reno Depot and Rona. Reno Depot has a massive plumbing section that has almost every piece of plumbing known to mankind. When I say almost, I mean "Everything but the fitting I needed."

I won't have time to check it tonight, and tomorrow I leave. But I'm on holidays, so I'll check for it when I get back.
