Hello everyone... I just replaced a woofer and amp because the woofer blew and I thought it was the amp... but anyway... I got a Sony XM-1252GTR amp, rated at 340W RMS @ 4 ohms, and running an Infinity 10" 1040W, capable of 250W RMS @ 4 ohms, max of 1000W. Its in a custom enclosure that is ~1ft^3, with no fiberfill.

Anyway... the amp started cutting out a few days ago, also, it seems to be kind of random in the amount of power it puts out, and its not very loud. When I got home from school yesterday, I took a look as it was cutting in / out and I could have made breakfast on it it was so hot. I pulled my old amp out to see if it did in fact still work, and it almost sounded like it hit harder than with the new amp. Old amp was/is XM-2100GTX, 250W RMS @ 4 ohms. Both were being powered by 4 gauge to a distribution block, and 8 gauge from there to the amp. Dont have the other amp hooked up any more since it got stole along with the old head unit. Fortunately the day before that I pulled out the sub and old amp, and got the sub replaced under warranty! (I love crutchfield).

Anyway... Power is coming off the terminal on the side of the fuse block in the engine bay, ground is on the back seat mount.

Any ideas? Why do these amps get so hot?

Basically, that amp is getting hot because it is pretty much toast. Sony stopped making good car audio products roughly 10 years ago (a couple of good spots this year). Their amps are VERY unreliable, as you have seen. If you can replace it under warranty, do so. If not, look here- excellent deal (I ordered 4 of them myself).
