I was toying with the idea of buying a Whipple or Vortech supercharger for a 08' v6 stang I plan to purchase as a daily driver. I decided against the GT because of the current gas crisis. Am I going to significantly shorten the life of my engine/trans with a professionaly installed supercharger? I know the manufacturers claim the will not kill an engine proper use but I beg to differ. Anyone faced with this dilemna?

So why not just get a GT cause the milage will drop as soon as you charge it. Then your back to square one, right. Maybe start a thread "What kinda gas milage do you get in a supercharged v6?"

Good point. I wonder how much it will drop.

Whipple does not make an SC for the V6

I have the Xcharger and my mileage is within 3mpg of stock. The X uses a bypass valve that bleeds air around the SC with normal driving an no load. (not much fun but you can get reasonable mileage) The secret to long engine life withan SC is good dyno tune and reasonable boost.

The 4.6 cars tend to only get about 1MPG worse than the sixxers from what I've seen. Once you stuff a couple atmospheres into the 4.0 any mileage benefit goes down the drain, and you still have a v-6. I would at least look into a GT..

the insurance would still be a little cheaper on a 6, which over the course of a few years could be thousands of $

The insurance is cheaper but if you put a S/C on it you will have to run premium gas which is more than the 87 that the GT's use.

from what i have read. turbos usually have better mpg than sc. since the turbo uses exhaust gases to spool. where sc use pulleys. so theres less wasted power.

I actually get better MPG with the turbo than I did before, 27 on the highway at 75-80 MPH.
