BTW I got 202 miles on the last tank, lasted me from last sunday to today. I still can't figure out how you are driving 360 miles a week with a permit.

i have my licence have for a while now. :D im 16...got my licence the day i turned 16 :D Nov 20th.

me to, I get around 300 driving the slowest I can drive on road trips. I will put more gas in half way just to make sure but thats my average. Some nights putting in a half tank will get waisted in 4 hours just cruising around. So if you have a heavy foot just expect your mpg to decrease significantly.

ryan, just buy a beater for like 500 bucks and call it good, my insurance was like 265/month when i was 18 and had just a 5.0, when i was 19 i bought a 94 f150 w/ the 4.9 and my insurance went down... get a civic or something for a dd, your insurance company sees a 16 y/o kid driving a 5.0 mustang all year round they are going to rape you, i bet your paying over 200 a month

you are really sounding like a kid now. you have at least 4 years until that thing is even properly broken in(you know when it gets that curve in it from being under your ass all the time)

Not even close...i pay 89 every month.... parents have a perfect driving record and never any accidents...my rates are damn low! and i love it.

damn e police.

dude the more you open your mouth the more ignorant you sound about life outside mom and dad's house. quit while you are ahead and enjoy your time in high school. life is going to give you a swift kick in the nuts soon after so live it up while you can.

If you really want your car, you will make it work. We have all seen the work you have put into it, it looks like you really want it.

If its too much of a burden, sell the bucket and get a honda. Stangs are Penny (not even dime) a dozen, there is plenty of time to buy another.

since i'm only 18 myself and have been in your shoes i guess i'll throw my opinion out there, so take it fwiw.

instead of having all of these thoughts about swapping to a 5 speed and 3.73's etc. why not invest that time it doing all of the maintnence to make it run more efficiently, thus getting better mileage? take a weekend and try and track down if theres vaccum leak, seafoam it, oil change if needed, wheel bearings, brakes if needed, etc. then after all of this, if your still getting bad mileage, then a 5 speed swap may be something to consider, although i could never warrant it for gas mileage being the only reason. thats only because i've done the 5 speed swap (along with my 5.0 swap) and it can be a pain to do (especially when you don't have a garage to do it in.

like i said, just my opinion. but i've had about 5 or 6 of these things since the 7th grade, so i know my way around them and i've been in your situation.

Ryan,

For what it's worth, my Merkur is virtually an SVO with a different wrapper (yet very very different in a lot of ways) and shares the exact same engine. The XR4Ti is actually about 300lbs lighter than the SVOs, and have one of the lowest aerodynamic drag ratings of their time, which you would think all adds up to better mpg...but not really. Mine is still very close to stock and only gets 25mpg which is right at what they're rated at by the factory. Once you start upping the boost and adding toys to it, that number is going to drop. If you were to take a 3.08 equipped 5.0 5 speed and drive it reasonably, you'd be at least 20mpg on the highway so it's really not that huge of a difference. By the time i get mine intercooled and all the supporting goodies needed to run 25psi, it'll probably be around 20mpg itself (although i'll be making 300hp at the wheels compared to the 225hp at the crank of the stock 5.0).

It's all in how you look at it i guess.

Oh and i'll also add....that 300hp might sound awesome, but for the money you can probably have 400hp with a 5.0...that's the reality of having twice the displacement. Also my 2.3 is gonna take a lot more attention than your 5.0 will at the same power levels, so it's going to stay more expensive...which if you can't afford the gas bill for a 5.0 you won't be able to afford the attention to detail bill of a turbo car either.

2.3's are FAR from expensive to modify, especially if you are mechanicly inclined at all. I used to own an XR as well and 300whp can be done for $1000 easily. 3" exhaust, Manual boost controller, front mount and a fuel pump and you are easily knockin on 300whp.

There's a few local guys here running 400whp on their 2.3's with less than 1500-2000 in the motor. One guy has a 2.3 in a Pinto, including the cost of the car and everything I think he is in it for around 3k and he's running 10.5's.

The 5.0 can't compete IMO for bang for the buck. Let's not forget, the block on those motors is pretty much indestructable, and they are incredibly simple to work on.

Well, i do agree with all that, but for 1k you could also throw 2 T3's on a 5.0 and make 500hp...it's all in how you look at it.

Ive had my car since I was 17(20 now) and was a senior in high school. Worked on a farm so amount of hours didn't matter but I didnt work to many with school and still trying to be a kid. But I did work 30-45 hours a week in the summer starting when I was 12. Paid for the car, insurance, and gas so you can too I am sure. As for fuel milage, there is a reason my car only comes out on the weekends. Honestly I have no idea what it gets for fuel milage, but really dont want to know with how much 93 goes for now. But for a toy who cares if its now $5 more to fill the tank, guess I have to think of it that way!

Yeah but if you are insured on your parents vehicles, their rates went up substantially. I payed $80 a month for my car when I was 16 but my dad had to shell out an extra $1500 every 6 months to insure me on all of his cars. Im sure your dad isn't paying quite that much because my dad was insuring me on a full coverage insured 03 mach 1, along with 2 other v8 vehicles.

if you even have a child of 16 in the house your insurance will increase whether that child has a liscence or not. A B.S. rule if you ask me, but one that most insurance companies use.

yeah i understand that but i did all that a few months ago...havent sea foamed it yet and thats not a bad idea!

ryan: svo's take not really alot of wrok but are definately hobby cars, and not really dd material, yes you can dd them ( i did) but the boost bug will get you and then its down hill from there... Swap the pos aod for a t5, get some gears, and tune it up, it will be very dependable!! an svo dosent get that good of mpg either, my bolt on 90lx got 25mpg on the highway, and 16 intown, my h/c/i 86 got 22mpg on the road, and 14 intown, except the 86 was alot more fun lol.. just stick with the 5.0, you think insurance is bad, try having 2 or 3 5.0's on your insurance, and in highschool!!!
