So far i know that i have to replace the K member, the fuel lines, the fuel pump and possibly the fuel tank, i have most parts but a few i might have threw away. Think i am missing are the perches that hold the trans cross member. i know i must replace engine harness, the one that runs to the computer, and to the gauge cluster, anyone know if theres anything out there that fully details what i will run into during the swap?....btw before you start saying why, its only cause i put a rod through the block on the 4.6 that i am swapping it out and the 4.6 costs WAY more to build then a 351w

Thanks

The PCM,ABS,ICM,GEM and the CCRM will not work without some serious work.. all these modules are networked and require inputs from each other to work..

IMHO it's not worth it, your better off building up a mod motor or selling the 4.6 car with the blown motor and buying a 5.0 car

I put a 2001 4.6L motor, trans, ECM, dash, ENTIRE HARNESS from headlights to tail lights, gas tank, fuel neck, fuel lines, ABS unit, brake lines...EVERYTHING from that car into my 81 notchback. You need the whole harness. In the back of the 99-04 Mustangs they have a fuel pump driver module that is tied into the harness, and without it, the fuel pump will NOT work. TONS of work, but well worth it.

Here are some pics.

11 months worth of fabrication, welding, cutting, trimming, body and paint work. Well worth it in the end.

Thats a nice install , but i was looking for info on the opposite of what you did. converting a 4.6 car to a 351w.

It is the opposite, but its the same theory. Almost nothing in your car will be untouched. Basically, you're gonna have to rip it all apart and completely rebuild it. And that doesnt include any fabrication you will have to do.

i haven't done it, but done some research on it.
as svttech said, there's so much inner-workings between all the systems that i'd try and see what you could do to utilize the vehicles original computer and wiring harnesses.
the key would be to fool the 02 EEC into thinking that the 351 motor was the original 4.6.

Why would you want to reverse that? Just buy a 94-95 SN95 - they had the 5-point-slow

in my case, it would be for the cubes.....
if you can make a 5.0 work, then you can make a 351 work.
and if you can stuff in a 351, you might as well stroke it to 427 ci.
now we're talking Z06 killer.
that's the major shortcoming of a 4.6 motor...no practical way to up the displacement significantly.

The thread title says "Swap 95 5.0 GT motor to 02 4.6 GT"

So does that mean what is says?....5.0 to 4.6L??

Or does that mean put a 5.0L INTO a 4.6???

I took it as swapping a 95 GT car to make it have a 4.6L in it.

Woah, hold on. You are going to a 351 because it is cheaper, and then talking about stroking it to 427? That's not cheap either.

And just because a 351 stroked to 427 has the same cubes as the new Z06, doesn't mean you even have a chance against one. Though the cubes are equal, you have to remember the rod ratio and bore to stroke ratio of your 427 is going to be MUCH worse, not to mention the Z06 is light and has an excellent suspension setup (1.7 60's on the factory tires!).

What are your goals for the car? Boost/N20/horsepower/ET/$$$$? A 351W with stock cylinder heads certainly won't be an improvement on a junk yard replacement 4.6.

OK, i'll submit that there are other advantages that the bow-tie wearer has, and they may make the difference.
But I'd rather bring a bazooka to a gunfight than a knife.....
I have both a blown 4.6 and a carbed 427 and, like the saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement
(and no, the stroker 427 didn't cost an arm and a leg).

a 351 to 427 isnt cheap for 500+hp he will need.
he will need big heads
little E7's or GT40p wont work well for those cubes.

we have a 67 with a 427 brodix and 550hp. it was NOT cheap. but its a termi killer and most other things too.

i realize i may have different intentions than the original poster, but my interest would be in a highly modified pushrod motor.
if it's the intent to compare the cost of modifying pushrod motors versus sohc motors, they're both expensive.
you can spend the same amount of money on stroking a sohc motor as you would a pushrod motor, but max out at 302 cubes for the cammer.
i'm currently looking at cnc heads for my sohc and they're going to cost quite a bit more than the AFR 205s on my pushrod motor.
blowers....about the same for either application.
so you spend the same money on either engine, and you'll have more upside with the pushrod if you go big on the cubes.

when i get done with the current round of mods to my 4.6, it'll be more than I can ever use on the street.
but sometimes it's just about doing something different, the engineering and technical challenge.

I would stroke it to 393, its a much more reliable stroke. A 351w upped to a 427 can have problems not too far down the line.

That being said, you could get it driving down the road carbed and then work on swaping it to an EFI setup later. That would get you kicking teeth in on the street a lot faster. If I were you, I'd build or buy an engine start stand and get everything running on that FIRST before you even try to tear the car down and swap the 351w in there. If you can make it run right on a stand, you can definately make it run right in the car.

i'd agree with the you on the cubes.
i ended up getting a great deal on my 427 shortblock and, since it was going in a 67 GT500 clone......well, i just couldn't pass on the historically significant displacement

Sorry folks if i was confusing when i originally posted(is posting on this old of post allowed? lol). i got a 02 stang had a 4.6 motor in it, well nitrous and the lack of a fuel pressure safety switch blew the 2 rods on the 4.6, i had a 5.0 95 convertable smashed, so i figure i can get it done , well why u ask? moneeyy that and after the 5.0 works well with efi, i can put in the 351w which is stroked for use of a turbo and also blueprinted.
btw atm the 5.0 is in, and half the guage cluster works(still gotta swap it to the 95 cluster + rewire ) it runs but havin fan problems . that and DANG is that fuel pump loud!

What EEC are you using?
Is this a street legal car or a track car?

I saw a guy who used an explorer 5.0 in a 99+ and ran it all using the 99+ pcm. He had a website but I can't find it anymore.

Anyway he just spliced the 5.0 harness into the 99+ harness and just switched a sensor or two and had it running well. Note he used the explorer because it had the dis on it.

This would make a 5.0 into a 99+ alot easier and give us some more viable options for large cube engines.

Someone with strong google skills should be able to find the info.
