I'm replacing my TR3650 manual transmission with a 4r70w automatic. I need to know the following:
1) Where can I get a new wire harness for the tranny? I don't want one from a salvage yard.
2) How do I modify my computer to accept this tranny? Can I order a chip to plug in? Or send in my computer to reflash it?

get the harness from a junkyard. a dealer will charge thousands for a harness, those things can be extremly expensive.

as far as the computer goes you need to have the as built data in the pcm changed and reflashed as a auto, I would contact a good local tuner and see if he can handle it.

My TR3650 has bad syncros for 3rd gear. I need to replace tranny or rebuild it. A rebuild kit costs about $1,000. But no guarantee that it will hold up. Swapping to a TKO will cost about $2,800 doing it myself.
I drive about 2 hours a day in heavy traffic. A manual tranny is not really fun in traffic. But I really like it when not commuting.

I agree with you.The problem with a junkyard harness is that it is hard to find a fresh unmolested car. I worry about the condtion of the connectors. Can I search junkyards by internet yet? I haven't been for about 10 years.

You do not need the entire vehicle harness, just the tranny harness. Harness choice should be the same year (or range of years) as the tranny. Ford changed internal wiring of the tranny in '98.

You WILL need an automatic computer though. You can't reflash or chip yours to run an automatic. Some folks think that since they see auto functions in some of the software they might look at for a 5 speed processor that the computer can be adapted. It can't, the necessary hardware is NOT on a 5 speed computer. I'd suggest finding an auto computer from the same year as yours is now.

I have a tech article on my site - see sig - go to the tech article link. The article is how I added a 4R70W to my former 5 speed '95. Not exactly like yours, but close enough to help. Mounting the shifter can be a pain because interior tunnel heights are different in 5 speeds and autos.

Good Luck!

try http://www.mpsautosalvage.com/

I got my manual/clutch pedal assembly from there. I need a manual trans stang wiring harness (for my auto to T56 swap) so I'm about to contact and see if they have one available. I wouldn't worry too much about the harness or connctors being "molested". It just sits there; unlike a transmission or motor being beaten on. ;)
