Switches?

For you guys running nitrous or other accessories that use switches, where did you put them? I'd love to make a panel for my ashtray spot, but there's no way I'm gunna spend $90.00 for one made by painless wiring. It's just a piece of metal with 4 switches.. I want to have it there and where the lighter is have a button, but I'm not the best at creating stuff like that.

Anyone make one or have any other ideas?

Use a piece of 1/16 or 1/8 thick plexiglass and cut the holes in it yourself. You can paint the pack of the plexiglass black so you can't see what's behind it.

We used to do this all the time in engineering class for projects that required 1 - hand controls 2 - some kind of aesthetic presentation 3 - short money.

Plexiglass can be bought from any glass shop for about 4 bucks a square foot.

I was thinking of putting them in the same exact spot where you are looking...i was just planning on using anything and cutting it out myself, shouldnt be too hard

$40 instead of $90. I will warn you, mine was scratched up when I got it. Luckily the company I worked for back then had a powder coat booth. So I just had them powdercoat it black after we sanded out the scratches.

I actually had a different idea for when I get my nitrous.

I planed on making a gauge panel under the radio, put a A/F ratio gauge, and maybe a NO2 pressure gauge, and then ,between the gauges, a safety switch and a small button for the purge with a red LED over the switch to tell me when its on. I think it will actually look pretty cool.

I made a panel out of plexi-glass that fit in my ashtray. I cut an angle into the it so it is held down the same way the stock ashtray was held into place. I also painted the underside black. I just want to square up the edges on a belt sander as its alittle rough around the edges.

The red switch is going to be the line lock (not on yet), the blue is for the N.O.S. bottle warmer, and the knob is the tweecer knob with the red line being the off or factory setting. I want to cut out the stock cig. lighter and put one of those small (1 1/2) N.O.S. bottle press. guages there.

Having an automatic with juice, the switch panel in the ashtray location is great. I put my car in first at the line, hand on the shifter, thumb on the nitrous activation switch. Launch the car at WOT, then immediately turn the juice on when the tires will hold. I'm on my way into second gear. Very nice setup.

blksn955.o - That hole for the tweecer is sick. I like that a lot. I just keep my toggle in the glove box with my USB. I thought about mounting it with velcro in my cubbie underneath my CD player next to my PLX-300 display.

I want to make a led display or readout and put it were the stock clock is, my Clarion(sp?) headunit has a nice clock in it and I dont need 2.

I mounted the switches that way so the tweecer knob box thing would be somewhat trapped. I then took another piece of plexi-glass and wedged it between the switches and box and used duck/duct tape to hold the box in place and to the switches firmly. It fit perfect and the switch connections have enought room to still get plugs on them.

I just broke down and bought a billet piece from LRS. Fit and looks great. It didn't say "MUSTANG" like the pic .... it says "STANG" on both sides in a nice style/font.

Well, this is my idea. I was planning on taking out the ashtray and fashioning a piece of plexiglass to take it's spot. I am also going to cleanup the wires under there and possibly paint the area under the ashtray black as well.

Then I am going to etch something into the underside of the plexiglass...something easy like "COBRA" on both sides of it. I am then going to mount a couple blue LEDs under it so that the "COBRA" will light up and it will also have a nice blue glow to it...but not too extreme of a glow. This would go with my blue lighting scheme on the interior (autometer cobalt series gauges, amp, few other things). I'm not gonna put switches on the ashtray piece tho.

The switches will go under the radio.

In that little cubby hole under the radio I have my digital a/f meter mounted and my tweecer mounted above it. I was planning on somehow cutting a piece of plexiglass to somehow fit over that cubby hole. I am going to tape off the part where the display shows and the rest of it i'm going to paint black on the backside. I'm going to cut a hole for my tweecer knob (both the tweecer and the a/f meter are mounted on the far left) and then the rest of the space will be for my switches. The finished product will have a clear area for the a/f's digital display in the bottom left corner and the rest will be black...or possibly something different for the background.

How do ya'll think that would look . I'm just brainstorming for now....I've gotta get the car running 100% first.

Clay, the lighted-lettering idea works. I had a different plate on mine originally (it didnt follow the contours of the ashtray area like my newer one attempted to do). I had gone to the office store and gotten little stencil letters and laid them out to caption what each switch was for. I painted the plastic and removed the stencils to reveal the clear letters. I liked it fairly well but was far too lazy to do that again on the next plate. I suck at arts and crafts and little stuff like that takes fine dexterity [like getting those stupid little letters off my fingers and placed straight].

That sounds like a plan though. You can grab lighting from the ashtray light bulb if you want.

Yeah, I was looking at a neon harley davidson thing hanging on the wall that had the letters engraved and suddenly got inspiration lol. I figured that plexiglass and LEDs would imitate that effect. I already have the plexiglass..and the dremel helps as well. I was actually thinking about getting stensils and doing something similar to what you did...but then decided I want the entire ashtray panel to be clear and smooth (engraving on the underside of plexiglass.) However...that is a very good idea for the little cubbyhole I was talking about...heh, didn't even think about that.

I'm thinking after I get this whole fuel pump thing over and done with I'm gonna start on that project. Give me something to do on my day off.

And ur not alone...I'm not good at arts and crafts either...and I've never worked with plastic. Good thing I got a couple sheets The good part...I'm young and have plenty of time to learn
