I went to Super Autobacs looking for a synthetic tranny fluid. I've seen Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, and Royal Purple Synthetic ATF but they don't meet the Mercon V standard (only Dexron III and Mercon). The only synthetic tranmission fluid I found that meets the Mercon V standard is Amsoil. Does anyone know of/recommend any other synthetic tranmission fluid?

Buy the synchromax and you'll be pleased. Mercon V is garbage fluid and shouldn't be used.

Don't use syncromesh unless you want something GM made running around in your tranny. AMZOIL is way better.

I was told from a transmission company that Mercon and Mercon V are essentially built up from the same base stocks, but the main difference is that Mercon V has more additives to protect the transmission.

that would be true if the transmission in question was a 5 speed. however the transmission in question is a 4R70W.

it is true that the only fully synthetic Mercon V is Amsoil. that is a very good fluid. the other good Mercon V fluids are Motorcraft semi, Castrom Mercon V and Valvoline Mercon V.

so what your saying is that syncromax is a good oil only for the 5-speed (t45)???

i think synchromax is good because when I saw my manual (for 2001 Mustang model year), it says that automatic tranmissions should use Mercon V while manual tranmissions should use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. This is again for model year 2001... Do you have your owner's manual?

I am going to assume that you didn't read the thread closely enough and that you were assuming he was asking about a manual transmission fluid. You need to clarify your statement as Mercon V is NOT a garbage fluid.

Personally I would stick with Motorcraft Mercon V in your 4R70W.

While the Amsoil ATF is probably good, it is a universal fluid meaning it meets a lot of different specifications. Mobil is also supposedly working on a new version of Mobil 1 ATF that will be Mercon V compatible but, it will also be a universal fluid meeting lots of other specs. I am not sure how you can meet so many specifications without making compromises. The phrase "jack of all trades, master of none" comes to mind for me
