I used the search function but did not find much on the issue....

I just replaced the T-45 transmission on my Car w/ a used T-45 (mine was grinding going into any gear, even 1st or reverse from a dead stop!!). After I installed the used transmission (unkown miles but was pulled from a running car) and drove it around the block I heard a loud whining noise that sounded like the terminator superchargers in first, second and third gears (no noise in 4th or 5th gears). Its loud enough that my brother who was outside of the car heard it over the exhaust as I drove by (I have a Bassani X-pipe w/ high flow cats, magnaflows and dumps). It gets louder and faster as the revs increase in first, second and third gears. Has anyone had this noise...how bad is it (if at all)???

I can get into any gear (no grinding), my clutch feels great (only 20k miles on it, its a Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch)...

Other Info....

3.73 Gears in the Diff (same as before swap), Steeda Tri Axe Shifter (same one on previous transmission)....Also, I did not have this noise before swaping T-45's...so I do not think its the gears....

Any Clues?....Opinions?

i can think of three possible things:
1. Throwout bearing siezed, possible clutch set to tight not releaseing TOB from pressure plate.
2. input shaft bearing in the tranny.
3. Pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft.

does the noise change when the clutch is in or out?

BAck in march I had a t45 rebuilt in my 01 gt and when I got it back 3rd gear did exactly the same thing but only in 3rd,I took the car back to the shop and they had to replace something that they missed on the rebuild but I dont remember what it was...sorry I cant be more help but at least that might tell you something.

when I put the clutch in the whining noise goes away...

I put a new Ford TO Bearing when I changed the T-45...could I have installed it wrong? (looke right, slid right over the input shaft....

Pilot bearing is the same as before (old) but I did not change it because I did not have a clutch alignment tool.

The shaft turned easily and w/o noise when it was outside of the car...

That pilot bearing could be the problem, some correct me if im wrong but since the noise stops when you push the clutch in can that mean its the pilot? An alignment tool is cheap and most auto parts carry them.

If it was the pilot bearing wouldn't it make the noise in any gear instead of only 1-3? I think it stops making the noise when the clutch is in dues to the fact that the transmission is disengaged....

Drove it again this morning, still only making noise in 1,2, and 3 gears....

I honestly dont have any ideas what else it could be that hasnt already been mentioned,All I would know to do is make sure all bolts are tight, proper amount of fluid is in there, and if thats all good... a good tranny shop should be able to tell ya whats wrong at no charge,or at least thats the way it is here.

When I had my t45 rebuilt I pulled the tranny myself and dropped it off at the shop and they only charged me $400 total,I know its not what you want to hear but until someone really looks at it,its kinda hard to know for sure whats wrong.I would think that if it was a bearing or something it would do it in all gears all the time, but its just certain gears....maybe worn gears...

Ouch. Also I forgot to mention that when mine was done the gears were in very good shape so I didnt have those replaced....reason it was $400,they wanted $875 for a complete rebuild. My car only had 80k miles on it,my prob was the synchros and shift forks.Thats why i keep the gears in it.I know you can get rebuilt t45's online for about $750, but then its gonna be around $200 to ship, unless one of these online places are maybe in your area, then $750 plus gas isnt too bad.

I dunno if it would solve all your probs, but when I bought the Mach I changed out the old tranny fluid and used Mobil 1 Syn and it made everything feel so much smoother when shifting.I guess it couldnt hurt to try.

You sound just like me a couple months ago!! I bought my 99GT with 60k miles on it, had it inspected and everything. Took it to the track to get some starting times before my build and after a day of beating on it all of a sudden the trans would whine through 1st 2nd and 3rd. People thought i had a supercharger in it lol so i took it back to the dealership since it is under warranty and they inspected everything and it was fine. Changed out the t.o.b. and it was still whining. They said that they didnt find any problems at all, no slipping no grinding or anything. Shifts were firm. Took it to my buddy who is an awesome mechanic and he said it might have been from the tranny not ever getting beat on, then me taking it to the track and beating on it got all those gears broken in. Just my .02 from my own experience. She still whines to this day
