Ok,
I am 99% sure I just got ripped off and was sent a T-5 from a 4 cyl.
There are no "tags" on the trans so I cannot ID it..
I did the JR Richter "test" and it took 4 complete turns of the input shaft to turn one complete turn of the output.. :( .
My question is..I am not sure abut the diameter size of the input shaft. I have no V8 Trans to "compare" with. I do not want to buy the wrong bearing and waste my time.
Question is.. is there a "easy" way that I can tell if it is the 4 cyl input shaft without having the V8 to compare it with??
I also want to make sure that the guy did not swap imput shafts to the V8...
How can I measure the input? To finally tell if I have the crappy OL 4 popper trans?

Table courtsey of Tmoss & Stang&2birds...

Now that you have specs, got out your micrometer & reasure the input shat diameter.

3.97 to 1 is a 4 banger :( . The V8 is 3.35 or 2.95 to 1. You cannot swap input shafts between 4 an 8 cylinder trannies, they will not mesh. The pilot bearing on the 4 is .59"(15mm) and the 8 is .668"(17mm)...or just look at the nice chart above :) .

Ok,
There is another wierd thing on the trans..There is this little green plastic cap/tube on the top of the housing.. Please see pics. I have not seen this on another trans. Does anyone have one of those?? I do not know what year this was out of as the shipper told me it was out of a 1993 5.0 Mustang which seems like a lie??

Right now I have a perfectly running 1991 aod 5.0 Notch.
I need opinions on weather or not you (whomever wants to comment) would swap the above trans into their car if they were in my shoes.

I have almost all of the other conversion parts minus the genuine 5.0 trans..
Should I just wait? Keep it auto and cut my losses? or dig deeper and buy another trans? I am going to keep the 1991 notch mostly stock...

That green tube is the vent. The bearing retainer looks pretty shabby aswell. I am currently running a 4 banger tranny, with great success, but it seems like alot of work just to put an inferior tranny in your car. I'd wait till you have all of the right components.

Here's some thoughts.

Many people have run the 4cyl trans in a modified 5.0 with no problems. Some people have had problems. A friend of mine hammered a 4cyl trans for over a year in his '88. I bought the trans from him (pretty cheap) and disassembled it for a college project. It still looked pretty good internally. I'm thinking about installing this same trans in my car to allow me time to rebuild the stock trans at my leisure.

The greater gear multiplication of the 4cyl trans will provide a little better acceleration. I think fuel economy may actually suffer depending on fifth gear ratios.

The input shaft diameter difference is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. It's just a matter of making sure you purchase and install the proper pilot bearing in the crank. Some people on this site claim to have used the larger bearing for the smaller shaft, with no problems.

Run the 4cyl trans til you save up for the six speed:D

Great luck on the swap.

If I cant have my apple pie, why accept a lemon sort of...
This sucks totally.
Well if I do put it in at least it will make my 2.73's feel like 3.73's :D .
This is fn bs.
I ahte when people screw each other over.
Especially when it comes to Mustangs.
I bet the "Classic" and "Muscle" era guys get screwed all the time... :notnice:

I feel your pain, I ended up with low tension rings in my stroker kit. Not what I asked for. Now I am in the middle of trying to do the job right the second time.
