T-5 and Nitrous?

Im wanting to start spraying a 100-150 shot on my fox but im a little worried about the tranny. I dont know if this car has the factory t-5, a rebuilt one or a replacment. It shifts smooth and does not grind and the car just turned 130k. The clutch is a Ram clutch, acorrding to the previous owner. What ever clutch is in it it is not the stock one, you can feel the difference. So how do the t-5's hold up to nitrous? Am I looking at a disaster with nitrous or should it be ok?

Mine never broke on spray. Playing around town you shouldn't have any issues. Just watch 3rd gear

Thats a little reassuring. It would be mostly just some short sprays on the street and maybe 1-2 trips to the track a year.

BTW, nice car, I have the same exact one

Just watch the powershifts

My t5 grinds in 3rd and 4th gear with my h/c/i setup, but I shift HARD.

I dont powershift ever. also I dont know if its the stock T-5, seems to shift a little to well for having 130k on it. No grinding or noises coming from it, shifts nice and smooth so im thinking its rebuit or a new unit. Im gonna take it to my friends tranny shop for him to look at and maybe he can tell me. Is there anyway I can tell if its the original or been rebuilt or if its a replacement?

My 91 notch had 2nd and 3rd syncros replaced and still didnt shift as well as this one and I sold that car with 91k on it.

Huh? I had two spray kits on my car. Never an issue with the T5. Stop talking as if you know me, b/c you don't.

Won't take it, 3rd gear is junk in a t5, went through 3
T5's before I wised up, 3rd every time.

i spray a 125 shot i have a window switch activates at 3000 rpm's and turns off at 5800 rpm's and a wide open throttle switch and much more safety equipment my T5 has no problems i have used 4 bottles so far with no problems...knock on wood. i have a king cobra clutch..

also do not spray anything above a 125 shot with the stock fuel pump...your motor has the forged pistons so you can run 150 shot safely with a bigger fuel pump safely motor wise....

Looks like it just depends on the car. looks like some people have good luck and others have bad luck. I think I may take my chances, ill run a 100 shot for a while and see if it holds up then move on from there.

if this is the stock trans your car came with than it will hold on spray if you dont power shift i run the same t5 in my wagon spraying 175 it is a service trans that will hold to 300 ft of torque in 3 years i have put 2nd and 3rd gear blocker rings in it over 50 n20 passes on it and 200 moter passes just buy a good shifter

It means that it does'nt take powershifting to destroy 3rd gear. It's not really a matter of luck, but rather a matter of time.

I was in the same boat as lutzgt86-91. I have been running my turbo setup for 2 years in some shape or form...and have been producing enough h/p to split the block in half. Then one day....while trying to tune on the freeway I start a slow roll in 3'rd gear. The rpms start to rise...and then BOOM! Hell, I never have powershifted either.

From what I remember, the weak 3rd gear is a combonation of a somewhat weaker metal...combined with deflection of the main assembly. Essentially a pinch point is created by the shaft deflection...which in turn shears all of the teeth off of the 3rd gear.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully my 40k mile t5 will hold up under this winter's plans and a lot of powershifting until I can afford a g-force.
