I recently had a new clutch quadrant and firewall adjuster installed in the car and ever since, I've had problems with the trans popping out of 1st. No grinding, no rough shifts or anything else, it's simply popping out of 1st under load. Car and trans has about 57k on it and isn't romped on so I think it has something to do with the clutch cable and firewall adjuster. How exactly do I go about adjusting the firewall adjuster to try to see if thats the problem? The clutch has alot of play in it as it grabs about half way let out. Also, I'm running a Hurst short throw and have checked the stops and they look good.

My first thought would be shifter stops, but if you say they are correct then adjust your firewall device. I don't know if your adjuster has a locking mechanism on it or not, but basically all you do is turn the threaded metal piece one way or the other depending on what you want to do. Counterclockwise would put more tension on the cable and clockwise would give it a little slack. If it's grabbing about halfway out that's usually pretty good, but it might need a little fine tuning. When you start pushing the clutch pedal in you should have about about a 1/2 inch of free travel before you start feeling pedal pressure so adjust accordingly.

It just started after I had the adjuster put in which makes me think the cable had too much tension making it pop out when under a load. I'll come to a stop, put it in first, begin to let out clutch and right when it grabs "bang", it pops out.

Are you able to actually engage 1st gear all the way? If you have too much cable freeplay (indicated by needing to push the pedal through the floor to get the shifter into gear), it can make it hard to disengage the clutch enough to get it in gear.

For diagnostics at least, you could turn the FWA counterclockwise (as it loosening it) to remove slack. If this helps, you're on the right track. Just be sure you dont have it adjusted too tightly if this does help.

Good luck.

I can engage 1st gear fully. I guess I'll just try what you said and loosen it. Am I correct in saying that I need to adjust it to the point where the trans doesn't pop out but I can still fully engage every gear?

I dont see how the clutch adjustment can cause popping out of gear - that's an internal trans issue.

The only connection I could make was that the clutch wasnt disengaging all the way and you were not making it all the way into first gear.

Since you say you're engaging first all the way, I dont see how any clutch adjustment will help.

MHO.

Good luck.
