How much power has someone put through a T-5 trans that it has held up. I know the torque spec is around 300 but has anyone put more power through one and had it stand the power? if so how much power and for how long?

Thanks,
Erik

Some guys break them with stock engines, other guys take it to 400HP and are fine.

How long it lasts all depends on how you drive and shock-load the trans. If you are smooth and don't powershift, it can hold up to quite a bit.

I went thru 3 t-5's in my old 88 with gears march ram air and exhaust, 3rd gear everytime, they won't take much abuse at all.

A t-5 could take 1000hp if you drove it ever so nicely. that being said if you drive it like most of us do it won't last long when you are putting more then its torque rating through it. I have installed 6 t-5's into my car now. Man i should have bought a tremec 600.

My buddy has a stock t-5 in his lx with 507rwtq and 501rwhp. But it a show car not a drag car and it still has the stock block to.

A Z spec T5 will handle your power levels, but for the cost of one of those you could probably build a GeForce T5 which will handle over 650hp.

This car is mainly a daily driver, with an occasional run down at the strip, ive had the car 18 months and its seen the track 3 times.

As an add on does anyone know a good way to beef up a T-5, are there rebuild kits that can upgrade the internals?

the previously mentioned gforce kit is what you should look into. It's a kit with upgraded internals. Not too many people build a 350 horse ride to drive it softly every day, in that case, don't expect it to hold up long.

gforce is a great kit. The son of one of my shop teachers is a machinist for the gforce trannies, however, they do the busch series tranny parts. I can tell you though from what I have read about them that they are a great rebuild kit, and if they hire quality people like I just mentioned they have great parts.

After 528rwhp, 12 months, 2k miles, and 3 quarter mile passes my stock T-5 let go. I babied the car on the street, so that's the main reason why it lasted so long. It got louder and louder every time i drove the car. It was a ticking time bomb.

Mine held up quite well. I didn’t really baby it per say…but I never powershifted….although I do row pretty damn quick. About a month ago I upped the boost to 10psi and was trying to retune with the laptop. Slowing rolling in 3rd gear…up came the boost and BOOM! went the T-5. I imagine I'm somewhere north of 500rwhp….and was planning on getting a dyno run in before winter. Anyways…time to start saving for a 600 I suppose!

Its all luck of the draw and driving habits. My pals held up to 368 rwhp and 400rwtq for years with just about every weekend at the track with powershifts. It broke the countershaft in half pulling in 3rd gear (not powershifting) when we added 100 shot. Mine is bone stock with 180,000+ on it with my 347 and 100 shot. I never powershift and I hit the track often.

one run at the strip and a good holding clutch and it will go. I'd save up for a tremec.
