I'm almost finished with my T-5 swap and until now it went along fairly smooth. Currently the everything is installed except the starter because for some reason it will not fit into the bellhousing. I bought the bell-housing from a junkyard and it had 86 written on it in paint pen so i assumed it was out of an 86 mustang. Everything bolted up fine to the bell-housing except the starter. When trying to put the starter on i first thought that the hole in the index plate might be too small, but it is the same size as the hole on the aod plate. My next assumption is that the snout on the starter might be too long but then when i go up to the parts store and have them search for different starter's in 86 5.0's... they are all the same. What is going on here?? Is it possible that this bellhousing is off a different vehicle that requires a different starter?? help please.

Umm maybe its a 98 bellhousing for a T45 I'm not trying to be a smart ass I was just looking at the typing 98 86 may be you were looking at it wrong, the other thing is maybe it a T5 from 94 0r 95 they have slightly different bells.

i may be wrong and somebody correct me if i am but you are doing an auto to 5 spd. swap right?i always thought that there was a difference between auto and straight drive starters on fords.i know on gm the diff. is big or small flywheel and ford was straight and auto.also i don't think they could've gave you an 98 bellhousing because i thought that 4.6 used an intergal bellhousing made onto the tranny because i know that a 96 gt uses that style(done a clutch job in one a while back.

figured out the problem...yes the 86 could have meant 98 mustang however it is a T5 bellhousing...someone mistaked a 94 mustang for a 98 at the yard. Now i had to get a different starter and use the proper clutch fork. problem solved
