T-5Z Ordered.........

Well I finally ordered a new transmission a T-5Z and an aluminum driveshaft from D&D. Can't wait I'll get it on Wednesday

A couple of quick Q's though.

I'm assuming that I should run ATF in it right? Also does it need to be changed after the break in period?

Also it comes with a 7t speedo gear what gear ratio is this for?

I would change the ATF in it after the break in. I know on ls1s the 10 rear ends would go bad at about 30k due to the shavings from the gears. I would use synthetic ATF also.

Doesn't D&D recomend or even include GM Syncromesh fluid? It's supposed to be the best. I don't think you need to change the fluid after "break in". D&D would know for sure.

What rear gear ratio are you plannign to use?

If you multiply 7 x gear ratio x tire revolutions/mile and then divide that by 1000, you will know which speedo gear you need to make your speedometer accurate.

What year is the transmission you had before? If it had a 7 tooth drive gear in it you won't need to change anything. If it had an 8 tooth drive gear then you will need a new driven gear.

The 7 tooth drive gear will allow the speedo to be perfectly accurate up to (and including) 3.73 gears. With the 8 tooth it was only accurate to 3.55 gears. Put ATF in. I personally use Redline D4, it's a synthetic specially designed for manual transmissions that require ATF. Synchromesh is recommended for Tremec transmissions that have bronze synchros....you don't need it.

Oh yeah, I would change the fluid after break in as well.....I don't know if you need to but it's added reasurance.

My old tranny was an 88 t-5.

I thought you needed a specific speedo gear for each gearset?

Ok so you can just install what you have for now and not have to change anything for your speedo to operate liek it does right now.

But when you go to 3.73's you will need to change the small gear on the speedo cable at the tranny.

So 7 x 3.73 x Tire rev/mile and divide that by 1000 will give you the gear you need.

So if you have 275/50R15's for example.....you need to approximate the rev/mile of the tire height. There's a formula, but if you go to www.tirerack.com and look up the size tire you want and then look at the specs of the tire, you will find the rev/mile already calculated for you all the way to the right.

7 x 3.73 x 803 / 1000 = 20.966 So that combo would need a 21 tooth speedo gear.

What I meant was the 7 tooth will allow you to get a gear that will make it perfect up to 3.73's. With an 8 tooth (90+) you can't get a gear that has that many teeth.
