T3650 rebuild project....

Hey y'all, I have an 02 mustang GT. The t3650 has to be rebuild, since it has completely died on me. I have been searching for a rebuild manual for it but have yet to find one that will suit this particular transmission. Anyone here have any pointers where I can look for one?

I've lost my links to rebuild kits... But unless you've done trans rebuilds before, and have the time and tools on hand, don't bother. You can pickup a lightly used 3650 for $500-$600 on ebay or other forum classifieds. Expect to pay that much for a rebuild kit (maybe a bit less, or more if you need more than just synchros and bearings and stuff).

I didn't think Tremec had the 3650 rebuild kit out.

ahah YES THEY DO, i just did a stage II rebuild on mine.....let me find my reciept from the shop and ILl PM you with all the details.. after parts and labor 1200$$, you looking to do the bell housing as well or just the internals..??

i would say just go to D&D. They advertise a rebuilt t56 for 1600. Thats what i am going with as soon as mine dies.

Fully built units cost nearly the same already assembled - I would just go that route (promotion sells a rebuilt stock units for 1200, and beefed up rebuilds for 1600)...or another stock trans from some forums or ebay for $600-ish shipped if you're not running a lot of power through it or launching on slicks.

What?? I think they had a special a while ago but not that cheap, but I don't see anything in that price range! A drop in kit for 96-04 start at $2899, and the Viper specs are $1000 more.

Also keep in mind the cost of a new clutch if you decide to go to a higher spline count input shaft in whatever transmission.

rebuild...

Haven't popped the top on the tranny yet, but I am not thinking it is going to be a complete rebuild. I am not doing bell housing or clutch, just synchros with any luck, worse case scenario a gear. If I find it to be cheaper to buy after opening and surveying the damage then yes, I am definitely going to, but considering I have the tools on hand to do so, and the time since my car is down for the winter and the space anyway, I figured I would go ahead and see what kind of money I could save in this matter. Hence, looking for a rebuild book. It is something I want to learn, and I figure hell, it's already broke, can't screw it up anymore then it already is. Of course, the advice on where to get another one is appreciated also, since that is a very real possibility.

Thanks so much guys! this is exactly what I have been looking for! I appreciate the information. Now lets just hope I can put it to good use-and not have to buy a new transmission. But, if I do, it is just a good excuse to upgrade.
