ok tranny is sitting on a table.

You know how you can put it in gear and the input shaft will be easier/harder to turn.

like 1st will be easier and 2 will be a tad harder, then 5th will be hardest to turn.

well i was spinning it today to check it and i noticed that reverse is harder to turn.... its about the same ratio as first so it should be as easy right???
mines like as hard to turn as 5th gear pretty much...

also i noticed somtimes it would make grinding noises when i turned it sometimes in reverse, then i just put it out and back into gear and it went away...

Are you trying to fix a problem you had when it was in the car, or just rebuilding?

The gears will take different amouts of effort to turn because the ratios are different, etc.

Reverse turns the input shaft, the entire countershaft, as well as the idler gear and shaft for reverse, as well as the entire output shaft, so its got a lot of stuff to turn.

Cant say what is making noise or grinding, but checking for above limits play or wear should find it. The shift fork wear and alignment may have some affect on this.

reverse is harder to turn because in first gear you're turning the input shaft which turns the countershaft which turns a gear on the output shaft... in reverse you're turning the input shaft that turns the countershaft that turns a reverse counter gear that turns a gear on the output shaft... dont worry about it bub cuz how often will you be in reverse anyway if there really is something wrong (doubtful)

adding fluid and having a 225hp engine turn the shaft (instead of a 1/50 hp human hand) will definitely help with that problem...

the grinding you hear in reverse is the straight-cut gears meshing and turning, when it was open did you notice some straight cut gears and then all the rest are spiral cut right... that sprial cut helps eliminate that noise your hear and actually makes the gears stronger too

... when you're going in reverse you hear a whining noise, which is the gear noise from straight cut gears... imagine in older cars where every gear in the tranny was straight cut... oh god the horror

thanks for the help it answered my questions

my t5 was fine according to your posts, but before i read this i TOOK IT APART!!!!!!!!!

stupid me. but its like the 5 billionth time i've dont it so it wont be a problem....

once again thanks!

oh an my little noise was from not being all the way in R so....

forgot something....
did any of you guys have problems with the frontmost syncro sleeve (on top)
sliding fowards?? mine done it a couple of times, its a PITA since i have to push all 3 of the little insert before it will slide back....

dont you have to put it in 5th gear then reverse? This is what i have always been told because reverse doesnt have a syncro. If i put it in reverse it will grind then go in but if i put it in 5th gear then reverse its fine. This is with my old and new t-5.

mine goes into reverse by itself ok, sometimes it might grind but if i make sure its all the way engaged its alright.

i just got back from putting it back together ( getting good at it lol)

i went and bought some gear oil and flushed the tranny good and used some grey gasket maker and it feels good now.....

also whats the correct fluid to put in it???
its an 89 t5 if it matter, they guy at oreilys told me dexron mercon auto tranny fluid, i was like o_O.

When new, a T-5 should have no problems slipping into Reverse on it's own. If it doesn't go, you should slip it into a forward gear and then try for reverse.

I don't recommend using 5th gear because the 5th gear synchro is a weak brass. Using it like this could put wear on it. I would use 4th gear because it's not uses as much as the other 3 gears and it has a more durable synchro.

I have a couple T-5 sitting around and I just tried spinning the shaft by hand

1st gear is the easiest by far.

Reverse is a little harder than 1st but easier than 2nd gear.

If you spin the opposite way by spinning the output shaft, then 5th is the easiest to turn and reverse and 1st is the hardest.....that's why you always park a 5-spd in R or 1st gear and never anything higher.

good point 5L5 about using 4th instead of 5th, and about parking in 1st or 5th

foxfan are you sure you're using the right fluid? if its that much thicker than what came out, your old tranny fluid must have been HELLA OLD, because new ATF is pretty thin. do not put 80W gear oil in your t5, please.

does ATF break down when aged or something???

i mean this old fluid that came out was like water pretty much. i was afraid the ATF was too thick, was like syrup.

so just flush it with thick ATF and fill with dexron mercon ATF ( red stuff) when the times comes??
