T5 issue

I have 1990 5.0 with a T5. It makes noise in all gears except 4th. It also makes noise in neutral when the clutch pedal is not depressed. It also grinds when going into gears sometimes. I cant downshift from 5th to 4th without putting it in 3rd first.

Can this be the throwout bearing? The bearing retainer? The pressure plate?

the issue with not being able to down shift from 5th to 4th is a syncro problem. The noise issue you have sounds like the throw out bearing.

The noise when the clutch is not depressed is almost definitely your throwout bearing. I would first take a look at the clutch cable and make sure it's properly adjusted. Probably not your problem, but it's a lot easier that pulling the transmission and clutch. Also, try double clutching to see if the grinding goes away. If it does, it's a synchro issue. Then, take it all out and inspect everything.

I do have an adjustable quadrant, firewall adjuster, and adjustable cable. I just installed these items thinking it might help in some way, but it didn't.

Why does it whine in all gears except 4th? Its not like all the gears are bad but 4th that wouldn't make sense????

usally it is a bad idea to use a adjustable clutch cable and a firewall adjuster. It is hard to set up. use one or the other.

You'r cluster gear may be worn at the input shaft -- that would make sense since every gear uses the cluster except for 4th gear.

well I only use the firewall adjuster to do the adjusting. It just all came as a package from steeda.

IS that a hard fix? Do I need to have the whole thing gone through to fix that?

If that's the problem you would have to remove the transmission and take it to someone to fix it.
