86 5L, with a rebuilt T5.

Just did an AOD to T5 conversion. Went super smoothly, then made a tragic mistake. Looking for a best case and worst case scenario...and some help on the next step.

So after the conversion, I got everything buttoned up and began filling the Tranny with ATF from the shifter. I was under the impression the T5 held...wait for it....wait for it....5+ quarts of ATF thanks to the wonderful folks at my local parts store.

At any rate...I overfilled it by approximately 1.5 quarts. Took the car for a test ride and as soon as I got on the throttle a little bit, it started to piss fluid.

I put it back on the lift and it does not appear to be leaking from inside the bell housing, but rather from the passenger side top of the tranny. It looks like there is some sort of a vent/blow off/check valve up there, but I cant get a good look at it without pulling the tranny back out.

My question is...if I pull the plug and bring the fluid level back into spec, do you think this will resolve the issue or do you think there has been major damage to seals that will require me to pull it out and bring it somewhere for repair.

The swap was a breeze...and the car runs and shifts flawlessly...cant believe I got hung up on this stupid, lazy error. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is a little breather tube type thing up on top, kinda like the one you will find on a rear end. More that likely that is what the fluid is coming out of. I would drain the fluid and get it to where its suppose to be and see what happens. I don't see how anything could have been ruined inside

Thats good news. I was hoping there was some sort of vent that was allowing the tranny to blow off the extra fluid.

can anyone else confirm this is the case?

He is right. Just pull the top plug and let it drain out. you are only suppose to fill to the stop plug. once it stops draining put the plug in there, spray with brake cleaner religiously, wipe down. should be fine.

There is a vent. Just unplug the top fill plug and empty it out. No damage should be done. There is nothing complex inside all you are doing is increasing drag with the extra fluid.

For future reference, it takes 2.8 quarts.

Problem solved. Pulled the plug and drained off the excess ATF.
Thanks
