i should know this cause i used to work in a trans shop but i removed and installed them instead of rebuild. but how hard can it possibly be to rebuild a t5 my 3rd gear whines and its annoying as hell. i dont wanna shell out the cash to have someone rebuild/repair it id rather do the work on my own of just buy an new z rated t5 (except i dont have enough cash for new trans)

See http://www.ttcautomotive.com/English/onlineorder/product.asp to download a FREE service manual for T5 or Tremec 3550
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

See http://www.ddperformance.com/index2.htm for parts

A T5 rebuild kit with syncros, bearings and other small parts costs about $160. It does not include any gears or shafts.

http://cartapes.com also has a video on how to rebuild your T5 or Tremec.. It costs less than $20, and is worth every penny of it.

i live close to allentown, and as for the low trans fluid i had this trans out a few times and topped it off each time only to have the same noise just less shifting problems..... the person who checked it out for me forgot to put in the front bearing in the nose cone. so i was missing a few gears and had a whining 3rd now its just a whining third

The only way to find out is get your hands dirty .... and I only suggest this if you are half-way intelligent :D

It must be easy because at my sons High School the Auo Mechanics class does the rebuild in 5day 2hour classes then they take a exam. I am going to take the class in Oct myself in the evening. The only thing that gets me about the T-5 is that I have seen the transmissions from the factory last 100k miles of tough use and the rebuilds last 10k miles. My guess is it is easier to get good clearance measurements and such with new parts.

You hit the nail on the head..." My guess is it is easier to get good clearance measurements and such with new parts." I will bet that many times the assemblers do not have either micrometer or dial indicator to measure the shims or read the clearances. They take it apart, slap some new parts back in it, and put it back together. Often there is no though given to the inspection of the parts not provided in the rebuild kit, nor to the measurement and clearances involved.
