T5 swap Got a few Questions.

I have recently purchased everything for a T5 swap and have a few hopefully easy questions.
1) Will this pilot bearing work for a 289 with T5? Summit roller pilot It lists as from 1968 -1973 302, but nothing for 289's. I thought it would be interchangeable?
2) Also I was looking at the speedometer driven gears and it seems atleast at summit they are all listed for autos? Even when looking at additional equipment after selecting a T5 transmission. I was under the impression I would need a different gear as the one from my C4 wouldn't mate up? I realize even if it did the speedo would be off.
3) What fluid goes in a T5? Is it the GM syncromesh fluid that goes in the T5?
4) Will an upper boot on the shiffter be enough to keep out noise and or any possible exhaust leaks? Or is there an upper and lower boot I should use for the shiffter?

I am sure I will have some more questions in the near future but these are what I got now before I get started tearing into her.

1. Yes, you want to use a roller pilot. The 302 pilot will fit in the end of the 289 crankshaft.

2. My conversion from a C4 required an 18 tooth. The C4 used a 16 tooth. Get one at the Ford house. Part # for the 18 tooth is: CODD-17271-B $4.80

3. Dextron III or equivalent

4. I used the '66 4 speed boot on my T5. Depends on what stick you use. In my case, I used a Hurst Competition Plus Shifter Stick and the early boot worked fine.

Questions on another swap:

I'm putting together my 71 Mach with 351C with a rebuilt wide ratio toploader and a friend has offered a T5 complete with clutch and housing from a late 80's ( I think) 5.0 Mustang for a reasonable price.

What should I look for as far a durability and torque ratings go? Were there different T5 transmissions or some I should stay away from? The option I got from a dealer was $2700 (new) ; his parts are like $800.

What model of T5 would work best for me, considering highway use and some street work?

The 351C is around 350HP.

Any info would be great.

Thanks, HH. [email protected]

Anything over 300hp and if you drive it hard you should get a T5z with the 2.95 first. If all you are going to do is street drive it and not "Drop the Hammer"at 4,000+ from a dead stop, then any world class T5 85-93 should work. One thing I would replace on any T5 is the weak front bearing retainer. Go with a one piece cast iron unit. Do a search on ebay and you will find them. Sell for about $35

Your buddies clutch won't work with your flywheel. His flywheel won't work with your engine.

You can buy an adapter plate and use all your clutch/bell housing. Then you bolt the 5 speed in. Fab up or buy (I don't know if they make them for the big bodies) a crossmember and you are done unless you need to have your driveshaft shortened.

The driveshaft issue is sporadic. Some need to cut and other don't.

Before 1990 are weaker than after. I would go with either a t5z or a 90+ tranny.

I wouldn't pay more than $500 for used tranny. You can buy brand new t5z 330 ft lb for 1300 from summit

OK I am going to Hi-jack my thread back......

Another question.
Will I have pinion angle problems after I install the T5? In the 67-68 cars is this a problem? At this time I have 5 leaf mid-eye springs from Laurel Mountain Mustang on the car.

Sorry I thought the first responder got your questions answered so I figured I would help the other guy out.

The only way to know for sure is to measure it yourself as a lot of things have happened to these cars in 40 yrs.

Find a nice level parking spot. Then stick an angle finder on the pinion and on the tailshaft. As long as they match you are set. You can find the angle gauge at Home depot for a few bucks.

Yes there is a bolt in crossmember https://www.dallasmustang.com/mustang-parts/product/TRANSMISSION-CROSSMEMBERS-1967-1970-T5/10315

That crossmember is for 67-70. They don't mention 71-73 or what I call the big bodies. I forget that others (65-66 guys) think the 67-70 are big.

I had a bad vibration at low speeds after I did my swap and needed to add a few washers under the tranny mount to raise it just a bit.
