t5 trans fluid

As far as I know it uses automatic transmission fluid and the latest Mercon level should be fine. Some transmissions like the Tremec (at least the first gen ones) use a special fluid that is rather expensive and available at the Chevy dealer.

what kind of fluid does the t5 take and what are some recomendations of brands etc?
Uses Dextron/Mercon fluids. Any name brand is okay but always top off with the same brand you select for the first fill. Elsewise drain and refill. You need this fine runny stuff so it penetrates very small orifices drilled in the tranny gears. You also need good seals and a yoke in good condition (no grooves) to keep this stuff off your driveway. Never use gear oil as it won't lubricate this tranny.

The expensive stuff Ronstang is speaking about is GM syncromesh. It is good stuff. The Mercon II or equivalent fluid will work. It takes 2 ½ quarts.

Other synthetic fluids that I have used is Redline and Mobile One Synthetic ATF.

I have only used the synthetic fluids on T5 that I have rebuilt with the new upgraded syncros. I don’t know how it would work with the older style syncros that were paper lined.
