I just finished installing an Autometer SportComp Tach. Sarted the car, and it ran between 1500 and 2000 off through the whole RPM range. I connected the coil wire to the smaller of the 2 wires coming out of the coil (green), was this the correct wire? Is my tach broken? :owned: :spot:

:stupid:

Right, the tach signal wire goes to the negative coil wire.

Are you sure none of the cylinder wires are cut on your tach? wires get cut for lesser number of cylinders (6 and 4 bangers).

what if you rotate the gauge in its housing a little? I had one that would read funky if not rotated just right.

Good luck.

:nonono: this damn thing is pissin me off. so i pull the cut wires out of the back of this thing just so i can figure how to reconnect them, and when i turn the car on the tack no longer reads, checked the connection with coil wire and its fine along with the others. it does twich and spike when i start the car. also the shift light still works and i can still adjust it, just now when i adjust it the needle moves up and down with the adjustment. damnit, am i just stupid or sumthing?

sounds like you bought an f'd up tach. definately risky buying items like that online.

the shiftlight works though? sounds to me like the needle might be damaged/broken if its not reading. good luck with it

well the tach was free, perk of working at a car dealership, also, it had just been working not minutes before, it seemed only too scew up when i messed with the cut wires. oh well, ill hook the wires up and see what happenes i guess. :bang:

another step closer to throwing it away, so i havnt had a chance to connect the wires, but when i officialy installed the tach, (screws instead on glue) now all the sudden the shift light clicked on and wont shut off, its a little bit dimmer than when it signals, but its still bright and saying on, when i get to the shift point it gets brighter then when i drop below those rpms its resumes its dimmer but still on action.

and another thing, this may be jst because how i hooked the power, and dimmer wires up but when i turn on my blinkers im getting a wierd clink noise from inside the fuse box. WTF MATE!! why does it seem i always have the big probs with the small installs? oh well :nonono:

id check where u grounded the tach too, i had a bad ground wire on mine, and when i turned the headlights on, the shift light would light up, and the tach would go up to 5k and sit.
