tach. mounting question

i wanna put a tach in my 73 but i would have no clue where to mount it, could i rig it to mount in the dash cluster where the dummy lights are, sence they dont workanymore anyway, i converted to gages and like them alot better but there mounted under the wiper switch, i probley wont put a tach in the car till i convert it to a t5 or something but i would like to know what all needs done

I have a 72 coupe with the same cluster as you. I mounted a mini tach to the steering column, slanted slightly to the left so it didn't block any of the factory gauges too much. I can post a picture from home this evening. It seem to be a perfect location.

you can put a factory tach in the non-tach cluster. you'll have to hard-wire it to the ignition and coil. the printed circuit will work also but you'll only get 1 or 2 workable dash lights as not all of the lights will line up.

The Sunpro SuperTach II goes in easily with a band clamp around the steering column. If you go to a U-Pick-It junk yard, grab a black anodized stainless steel band clamp from the intake air hose of a late model Ford, carefully apply black electrical tape to the underside of the clamp (between the clamp and the steering column) to protect the column and the installation looks great, too.

If you go to a U-Pick-It junk yard, grab a black anodized stainless steel band clamp from the intake air hose of a late model Ford, carefully apply black electrical tape to the underside of the clamp (between the clamp and the steering column) to protect the column and the installation looks great, too.

I actually used like a 4 or 5 inch hose clamp that i picked up at Walmart (about $2 for 2), spray painted it black and used a thin peice of rubber padding between the clamp and the column. And yes this was a very simple installation. If you get the clamps at Walmart you don't need to get drity in the boneyard (of course you may find other fun things in the boneyard).

It's a very nice installation. I wish I would have used rubber padding on my installation, but the electrical tape did okay. Where did you find rubber padding?

THe rubber padding was something I had scrounged from the trash at a previous job. We built and maintained rack mounted computer equiopment for Aircraft carriers, and the rubber padding was used as shock absorber under some of the old computers in racks that were removed. I scrounged enough to line the drawers of my tool box, my work bench with some left over. It's not too different from those rubber grippy pads that are sold as jar openers.
