Tachometer at zero, poor engine performance

Hi all,
Lately my tachometer at some early point in the drive flops to zero and then my engine starts performing really poorly. The tachometer doesn't register anything but zero rpms (but engine is still running fine) and the engine stutters when I accelerate from a stop, almost feels like it's going to stall but it never stalls. I have a 2.3 Mustang LX automatic. Is there a sensor that has failed or is my computer failing? I appreciate any advice or thoughts on the matter.
Thanks!

Sounds like your ignition module may be going out. If you have the 8 spark plug engine, it is a grey rectangular object mounted to your intake manifold. If you have the earlier 4 spark plug engine with a distributor, it is the rectangular object on the distributor. Replace it before it totally goes out on you.
