I've always used the bolt through spindles...and I've always drilled them myself...NOT for the faint of heart..the drill bit is expensive, the drill required even more so,...and if you snag the bit...it's a real bad day.
But..with a drill press, a slow moving drill speed, a sharp bit, and a drill press vise holding everything in place...a piece of pie.
