Taurus fan depth? Water pump rotation direction?

Anyone know how deep the Tore-ass (Taurus) radiator fans are? Looking for a junkyard solution to my radiator fan search. Another thread referenced the Taurus fans in regards to moving a lot of air. I'm a bit tight on room, but I might can fit it in. Got my twin turbo 351w running a few months ago, but have been away and unable to work on it. It had overheating problems in February, so I know it'll be a problem now. It'll even overheat at idle right now, but I don't have a fan on there. Also, the PowerStroke intercooler is pretty much blocking the whole radiator, so that's definitley part of the problem. I'm going to a smaller intercooler soon. Idle is around 750 to 800 rpms and idle timing is 28 degrees. 180 tstat and a Busch car radiator. I can't remember the dimensions of the core, but it's huge (3" thick, not sure of H & W.. have to measure next time I'm at the car). Cruising at 60mph it stays at 205 degrees on a 60 degree night!

Does anyone know the proper rotation for a 74 model year water pump on a 351w? Never saw the original belt setup, then I converted to a custom routed serp setup. Right now my pump is rotating clockwise with the crank.
 
my taurus fan is from a 93 3.8L v6 taurus and it is 5"..maybe a few tenths more as I had to eye-ball it w/ the tape measure stuck through the fins. I'll tell you, mounting it w/ a 3 core radiator will be pushing it, although some have done it I think. I have mine mounted upside down and put my overflow tank on the drivers side in a near-stock location. I made brackets to mount the fan to the radiator. I can post some pics if you want.

My car was wrecked in the front, so it's not totally stock dimensions, but I had a 3 core radiator in it and the taurus fan would not fit, so I had to buy a new two-core OEM radiator. The fan blows a lot of air and works very well w/ my DCC control from www.DCControl.com. You'll also want to upgrade your charging system if going w/ an electric fan - plenty of threads about that too.
 
I run an 94-95 fan simply because it's offset to the side slightly and give me better clearance. If the fan was centered, the motor would definitely hit the WP

Thanks for the input.. well, looks like i'm going to have to find a different fan. I only have 2.5 inches between my water pump pulley bolts and the radiator core. :bang: The largest mechanical fan I can run is 13", otherwise it would hit the hood. I have a rather unusual setup, so I am having trouble finding a fan that flows a nice amount of air that will still fit in my situation. Since all my accessories are on the driver's side, maybe I can shift the fan to the passenger's side of the core and squeeze it in there.. course, then it'll probably hit my crossover pipe. I'll have to measure my room and then take a tape measure to the junkyard, I guess.
 
as far as what style water pump i believe that only matters for which way the serpentine belt is routed. I have a reverse flow water pump on my 351w because i run the belt like the factory 5.0L run it. do you have a cowl hood or any ports for all that heat from the twin turbo to escape the engine chamber?

I doubt that would do much in my situation. It might help, but I dunno.. there's not much room for a fan in front of everything. As I have it right now, I have to pull the bumper cover off if I want to change any of the light bulbs up front! The intercooler is in front of the radiator and pretty much blocks all the surface area of the radiator. However, if I go to a smaller intercooler like I am hoping to do, then I might can get some clean air flow to the lower half of the radiator. Maybe with a couple small puller fans across the bottom of the core and some sheet metal duct work, I can get a little clean air to the core.

I have a factory cast iron water pump on there right now. It actually came with the engine from yard (did rebuild the engine, tho). I didn't buy a new pump because there were no signs of leaking, had seal drag, and it appeared to be in good condition. So far, it hasn't leaked, and should be working correctly assuming the rotation is correct. On my serp belt, I have the crank, water pump, alternator, and power steering. It's all in a big loop, and they all turn clockwise with the crank. Hopefully that's the correct direction.

I don't have a cowl hood, I got my whole setup to fit under the stock hood. (See picture below.) I am kinda going for a total sleeper look. However, I am not opposed to getting a cowl hood just for the fact of improving engine bay cooling. I didn't get one before due to the cost, but in a few months once I get my Snap-On tool bill paid off, I am not opposed to going to a cowl hood of some sort.

Right now I have the radiator sitting about 2 inches away from the intercooler. Before when I had them closer together, cooling was much worse.

I thought about an electric water pump, but I am hoping to drive this a fair amount on the street at some point, so I do have to wonder about durability. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but I've got to do something different in order to get this thing to cool off a bit.



And here is my serp belt setup, but with the old radiator. I have less room now with the much larger Busch car radiator.

I'm not sure if I can trim it far enough. I'll just have to go to a yard and get a visual for myself. Luckily the local pull apart has no shortage of 3.8 Taurus's. I might have to break down and pay for an aftermarket setup, but we'll see.

Thanks.. I have a lot of tuning in front of me to get done. By my calculations, once I get it all setup right, I should be able to get at least 650-700 horses at the wheels, depending on how much fuel I can feed it.

That black radiator is no longer in the car. It got replaced about a day after I got the engine running lol See pic below for the current radiator.. It's from a Busch team. My tstat is 180 degrees.

 
lol yah i would say that would rob all the air going to your rad. you can't mount that intercooler lower? usally when i see pics of mustangs with intercoolers the intercooler can be seen under the bumper. Always seems they are mounted lower then your current set up.

I installed it like that because of the way the inlet and outlets on the end tanks were shaped. Now that I have a TIG welder, I can change it however I want. I'm thinking over my intercooler options. I need one that's pretty decent and can flow a crapload of air, but also physically smaller than that. I believe the IC is the main problem in my cooling issues, so it will be changing as soon as I get some $$ and a place to work again.. I hate having to live in apartments!
 
Thanks for the links. I'll probably just have to go aftermarket on the fan. Those intercoolers are awesome, but quite a bit out my budget for this car. I had looked at air to water intercoolers, but I'm not sure how well that would work for me on the street. I tried before to get a mechanical fan, but I was unable to get the size I needed. A 13" diameter fan is as large as I can go without it hitting the hood.

Later today I'll have access to Alldata, so I'll try find some time to look up the factory accessory belt configuration of a 74 model 351w. Only problem on my setup is that the pulley is grooved for a serp belt, so if it has to turn the other way, I'm going to have to get creative.
