i was wondering what if anything would i need to change / modify to run a throttle body and mass air off of a 3.8 thunderbird or something. do i need to put bigger injectors in too or will i be ok, any modifications to the intake? and would i gain anything if i just put on a 3.8 mass air for the time being or will it make tha car run like ****? ohh by the way its a 93 2.3l 5 speed with a cold air intake, flowmaster, and one cat removed if that will help in anyway

Too much work for the return. It's not like your motor is pulling enough air at this point to make the stock 2.3 stuff a restriction.

it's worth doing if you plan on using any form of power-adder on the car...it is much more efficient as far as reading the amount of air the car is intaking compared to the MAP sensor taking a guess... it shouldn't be that bad to do this after all it is basically repinning a spot or two on the harness at the ECM.... but if you plan on putting on a turbo (which you can do as longer as you keep boost levels low and intercool it) i would use the vane meter off of a turbocoupe, but you have to use the ECM from that car also...easy swap..but you have to repin a spot or two there also.. Uh, Black, his '93 already has a MAF. Repinning isn't required for this swap.

93-2.3, the engine is only as strong as it's tightest restriction, and in the case of the '93 that restriction is the intake port of the head. Here's some data I measured:
Throttle Body: 309 CFM
Intake manifold: 160
Intake Port: 124 at peak valve lift!!
And for the MAF flow rate check out Tom Wilson's book on how to tune & modify the 5.0L. Conclusion: the intake port is limiting in this case; save your cash.
My flowbench link.

well in that case... i stand corrected.... save your cash... i wasn't sure if he did or not... ok so the question is what head to replace it with??? i know that the twin plug heads flow worse than the single plug head, so would you swap in that head??? and if so what to do about the 2nd coil pack??

Good to see some actual numbers, though.

Black, the DP computer is pitching in less spark advance, so swapping to an SP head won't cure all the issues. A person would need a MAF'd, 4-plug, computer to go with it. When you look at it, it makes the turbo swap a much more appealing option.
93-2.3, surprisingly that MAF outflows the TB and is the least restrictive section in the air path. Go figure. I agree, it sure looks like a blockage, doesn't it?

Happy Fourth, everyone

i'm totally with you on the turbo end of the spectrum... there's a kid on here that is running 15 psi on his non turbo engine...no vane meter,no mass air, just putting a vacuum check valve in the MAP vaccum line... but since he has a mass air...all he would have to do is bolt one in and have the exhaust welded with the new downpipe installed, so you could actually bolt in a turbo in an afternoon.. i guess that's just food for thought..
