TDC Timing Questions/Problems

94 Gt 5.0

Let just start here, I have my motor with no distributor and the motor is not at Top Dead Center (TDC).

-What I have done:
-Pulled the spark plugs
-From the harmonic balancer rotated the motor clockwise
-Put my finger over the spark plug hole, and waited to fell pressure (telling me it is in the compression stoke).
-Put the tip of a screwdriver through the hole and rested it on the top of the piston. Waited for it to come as high as possible before stopping.

Now heres my problem:::
The 0 degrees mark on the harmonic balancer is about a 1" to a 1-1/2" clockwise of the timing mark that has time punched in the metal????????????

What do I do?
Align the balancer and timing mark at 0 degrees?

With the spout connector out, she started great.
The timing was at 10btc so I left it.
Plugged in the spout connector and it died.
I adjusted the distributor enough to keep the motor running smooth
and it was off the charts, like a inch counter clockwise of atc...
Im clueless.....????

I have the choice of either lining the timing marks(which i know number one is not at the top), or i can make sure the number one is at the top of its rotation but the timing marks wont line up?

I have replaced it before but only to factory specs. Your probably right...
