temp. gauge goes up when I hit the brakes

This is the stock guage? That is probably normal. LOL.

You know what I will say next - a real gauge is the only way to go.
Good luck.

Thanks guys, this is what I've been hearing is just to go with a mechanical gauge, which I have all intentions on doing only if I can get someone to write me up or find a how-to article on installing a mechanical gauge on a 5.0 or something similar. I noticed something else wierd tonight, the charge on my volts gauge would vary from the bottom line to right where it should be and the lights dimmed to every time that it almost bottomed out. Maybe I have a bigger electrical problem than what I know about? thanks again.

A parts store can check out your charging system. Low alternator output can definately play with the gauges.

If you do need a new alt, I would recommend the 3G upgrade.

With the car off, you should see about 12.4-12.6 volts at the battery. With it idling, 13 volts+ and at 2K RPM, 14+ (I am loose with the specific because idle setting has a lot to do with the output from any alt, esp a 2G).

Good luck.

A search in here should get about all your install questions answered. If you have specific questions, post away. Otherwise, there are too many personal preferences on how to do things.

Good luck.

I am putting in a new autometer mechanical guage this weekend so I'll let you know how it goes and what to look for and possible problems. Seems pretty straight forward so it'll probably be a real pain :D . Anyone know of the best spot to tap into the dash lighting circuit for the guage light?

Once again, it depends upon where one is mounting the gauge. Any of the illumination wires work (radio Ill. wire, HVAC ill. wire, headlight switch ill. terminal, fuse 13, etc all work).

Good luck.
