The problem I'm having is with my temperature gauge. It slowly rises minutes after I turn the car on and reaches the red area. Sometimes it goes past the red as if the gauge or sensor stopped working, but mostly it stays around the extremely hot (red) area. It could be that the car is heating up but I doubt it. This started after my trip from El Paso to Austin as I was arriving to Austin. The gauge started scaring me by drastically rising but the car never turned off as I thought it was supposed to. I would open the hood and no signs of those high temps. I took the thermostat off, checked the fans and water pump and replaced the ECT but it does the same thing. Also (maybe coincidentally) the oil pressure gauge is going wacky too. The temp gauge rises when I turn on the AC (but sometimes drops) or when I turn the lights on. It is like draining the battery raises the temperature. There are no leaks and no smoke. I think it might be the sensor sending info. to the gauge (but then what is up with the oil pressue)? maybe these 2 problems are related. Can anyone help out? Maybe at least telling me where the sensor that sends the info. to the gauge is at? Thanks
 
A Hanes manual at your local auto parts stre car tell you exactly were it's at (I have no clue). What you should know is the 94/95 gauges are very inacurate. Most opt for an aftermarket temp gauge and most that have aftermarket tachs report the stock tacks to be as much as 200+ rpms off (ex: stock tach reading 6500rpms/aftermarket reading 6300rpms). Mine did that after I took the cluster out to do some stuff. What happened was I kinked the wire. Its a light blue one. And the sensor is right behind the water neck.
This is what mine would do minutes after start up.

Even if you solve the OEM gauge issue, in hot ol' Texas, you're going to want some real gauges.

The low speed fan does not come on naturally until ~208*F - this is already on the hot side. A manual fan switch or two is a popular modification.

The high speed fan should come on with the AC being on. If it doesnt, the gauge will rise with the extra heat being introduced into the radiator.

The sending unit for the temperature gauge is beind the distributor, in the lower intake manifold. It has only one wire going to it.

I'd get a manual fan switch installed ASAP. And a new 180* Mr Gasket t-stat and an oil pressure and water temp gauge would be my next steps thereafter.

No, there is no way it could get that hot that fast. The waterneck is where the radiator hose connects to the engine. Look behind that and there will be something with a wire going to it. Thats it.
 
Actually, the ECT is right behind the waterneck, and it has nothing to do with the gauge. The ECT is for the EEC and fan control.

The gauge's sender is behind the dizzy.
 
Thanks for everything. It seems that you guys recommend replacing the sender unit? Is that right? Maybe get some aftermarket gauges? Is the sender unit in the same spot for a gt40 manifold? How about the voltage regulator?

You can replace the sender if you desire but the gauge is still pretty useless. Remember, these cars are getting old and things break down/malfunction. It's nice to know exactly what's going on.

I don't think we have an IVR on 5N95's (anyone disagree?). And if it was the alternator regulator going haywire, there'd be other signs normally. I'd be lookin at a bad ground for the gauge cluster, as others mentioned.
