does anybody know how to test the camshaft position sensor that is located in the distributor. I looked in my manuals but nothing how to test it.

A good parts store can bench test the dizzy.
Alternatively, if you have spark and injector pulsing, the PIP should be ok. However, if missing both, that doesnt mean the PIP is bad.
Otherwise, you need a 'scope to check it's function.
