TFI Module and Stator Replacement for $850???

Well, my car would not start so I had it towed to the local Ford dealership. They told me that I needed a new TFI module and a stator. They want $850 for the work. I was thinking of buying the parts and doing it myself. I know the module will be easy to change but I am not sure about the stator. Is this a difficult change out? Also, what kind of module and stator should I get?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

holy crap.

The TFI module is under the maf on the passenger side (you can see it bolted to its heatsink), and the stator is inside the distributor.

What I did was just go to the parts store, buy a distributor with a lifetime warrantee and replace mine. I ended up buying a F150 one because it was taller overall and matched better with my intake setup.

The parts shouldn't run you more than $200, and install time is about 30 minutes.

Yeah, I was wondering if I should just buy a whole new distributer to make the job easier. Thanks for the help!

Just get a new dist. I replaced mine in like 30 minutes and it was my first time ever swapping one.

As far as the TFI, doesnt that just plug to some wires and is screwed to the engine bay wall?

Talk about trying to rip you a new one......For that price you can upgrade your ignition system to good plated wires and a 24 karat distributer !!!

Exactly. For that price you could put in MSD everything from top to bottom for the ignition system.

Take the TFI module to Autozone, just to see if it's actually bad, they can test it for you and will let you watch. You would need a press to remove the distributor gear in order to fully disassemble the distributor to replace the stator. It's far easier to just swap out the distributor.

Man the techs must get paid real good there!! Price on parts from ford is only $213


Are you sure there isn't something else involved here? Thats over $600 labor,even if you live in the most expensive area in the country thats still 6 hours or more labor charges. Is the problem intermitant and he had to run a bunch of diagnostics to find it? I just can't believe that someone would think a customer is that gullible.

I just got it towed back to my apartment.

The only thing the mechanic told me was it needed a module and a stator...he didn't say anything else. Mabye the labor comes from the stator change? Then you have to add $90 just for the diagnostics.

yes but stator replacement is pretty easy 30 minutes tops. I would have asked to explain the labor charges, but since you had it towed away probably best just to forget it.
