Tfi Silicone All Gummed Up = Stalling?

I have the fender wall mounted TFI module that fits in the square mounted thing w/ fins on it to reduce heat. When I changed the TFI out for a new one the old dialectic grease under it was all gummy and nasty. I don't know how much contact was being made for a good ground. I cleaned all the old crud off and put a New TFI in.

If a good ground contact was not being made on the old TFI, would it cause the car to have stuttering RPM problems and stalling?

I can't confirm for the fender mounted TFI's, as I have only ever used Distributor mounted ones, but I will go with what I know. The grease is predominantly there to transfer heat (if it even grounds there I do not know). Heat is a TFI killer, so it definitely could lead to problems.

Be sure you used plenty of new grease with your new TFI. I got tired of not thinking you get enough with the new modules, so I finally bought a seperate can of dielectric grease. Now I can put on as much as I want and know that it's covered. So far so good.

After I put my new motor in, my car bucked and surged at WOT around 3000rpm. I troubleshot just about everything and saved the TFI module for last, and that's what it was. I bought a new on and when I took the old one off, I forgot the put new grease on it. I took the dizzy off to polish it and just forgot about the grease.

Long story short, I am 99.9% sure that was my problem, because it went away after I changed it out... with new grease.

there is a grease that is better than dielectric grease to use, but i cant remember what it is. (though dielectric grease works very well).

Thermal grease from Radio Shack works good. A tube of the white stuff cost me $2 and lasts forever. See http://www.radioshack.com/product.a...name=CTLG_011_002_008_000&product_id=276-1372

The TFI has the ground built into the wiring and doesn't depend on contact with the metal it bolts to for a ground.

Ding Ding Ding.

I asked a very knowledgable buddy a couple days ago (Thanks Mustang Mike) and he mentioned the same product that Joe did. supposed to be just a little better than dielectric grease.
