The 2007 Official College Football Thread

i think a lot of it was also OSU had yet to face a team like florida. if you compare the way teams play, the sec is so different from the big 10, who's so different from the big 12, who's so different from the yadda yadda yadda...... nobody plays the same, and you never know what to expect when 2 teams from opposite "worlds" come together. OSU got owned by speed and a hard as hell defense. the spread is a good system, if it's executed properly. next year, watch UF, it's going to be scary how good that spread system is.

but for now, if OSU makes it, good luck to them, it'd hurt to have 2 huge losses in a row, definitely an impact on their "good name"

Good points on many parts, it's not that one conference is superior across the board, but that certain styles that are prevalent in one conference my have an advantage or disadvantage against another conference. Even though Florida embarrassed OSU, Arkansas and McFadden who ran roughshod over many SEC teams couldn't beat Wisconsin (Big Ten #3) and Tennessee couldn't get it done against Penn State (Big Ten #4). As to Florida's speed advantage over OSU, it really only was there on the front 4 of your defense. We hadn't seen anything like that, especially from your DEs. Offensively, we never challenged you. How many times did we play man and force Leak to throw deep? Hardly ever, we just sat there and let him dink and dunk underneath and let the receivers get 3-5 more yards after catch. That's not a matter of getting "out speeded", that's called getting out coached since Leak's weak point was the deep ball and we never even challenged you guys to try and burn us deep.

i'll tell you the one thing i really was sad about in that national champ game..... none of OSU's offense got past the front defensive line..... i was SO eager to see reggie nelson lay somebody out, and he never got the chance :(

lol, but yeah, like you said, it's different all around, and comes down to who vs who.

Id say getting to two national title games in a row would not have a negative impart on their name. Especially this year when they were not supposed to even win the big 10.

I dont know, I really think they have a good shot at LSU. LSUs defense imo is suspect and their offense plays against the strenghts of the OSU defense. I wouldnt bet on them to win but wouldnt suprised at all.

On the other hand OSU would lose to Florida, WVU, Oregon with Dixon, or other teams like that that run the spread offense with a good running QB.

LSU's defense has been playing with some key injuries. Dorsey hasn't been the same since that cheap shot against Auburn and some DB's have been in and out all season. No telling what would happen if given a month to recover. IMO they would be in their mid season beating form.

I think a playoff scenario like DK S posted would be nice BUT...the PAC-10 and Big 10 would HAVE to add two teams and play a conference championship. That is the ONLY way it would be fair to the other BCS conferences. The final BCS rankings would set the seeds. Then have two at large and use the current BCS bowls to play out. Even incorporate other "minor" bowls for the 1st round such as the CapOne and Cotton. I don't agree with a runner-up game like CBus suggested though. You lose, you go home.

Why does the Big 10, Pac 10, and Big East have to add champ games. Its not their fault your conference wants a title game to make $$. The conference title games are all about $$, no more no less. With that being said the Big 10 and Pac 10 would have to add a team and the Big East would have to add 4 and that is just not feasable.

Because in order for the playoff to happen that is the way it will be. The conferences that have them won't give them up...

lol, out of randomness, i was looking at espn's college page, and the vote on the page is "should every conference have a championship?" 80% of 16,500 voters say yes. the only state that is more towards no than yes is west virginia

Why do the leagues that dont have them have to use them in order to make a playoff work. Thats dumb.

Ohio State is the Big 10 champ, USC is the Pac 10 Champ, and West Virginia is the Big East champ.

Seems to work out fine to me.

The only reason you want other conferences to have one is because your team has to go through them and you dont see it as fair. Blame the SEC for having one not the Big 10, Pac 10, or Big East for not.

That or blame the NCAA for not allowing conferences with less than 12 teams from having one.

I don't make the rules. That is the reason they give for not having a playoff.

It's already a done deal. Plus Nebraska didn't care for Pelini so he will probably take him along too.

My question is, how much longer would it make the season if they HAD a playoff system?

Or, would they shorten the regular season...or what?

I mean you'd end up with an NFL-length season in college football. I dunno if that's a bad thing or a good thing.

that's a good point.... though i wouldnt argue more football! (the good kind of course, ncaa). if it was longer, i could see it as being bad and good, so i dunno

The only thing I like about College Basketball over Football is that you play alot more inter-conference games during the season. Its not possible to duck out on good teams like ALOT of teams do (not just Ohio State).

It would be cool if the Big 10 and ACC did a challenge in football like basketball. Or the SEC vs Pac 10 or Big 12 or whatever.

Or better yet Each team has to play 1 team from every other conference, may not work with the Big East only have 8 teams but still an idea.

It would stop the BS whining of the SEC teams who also have weak non-conference games from crying that OSU has a weak non-conference schedule 1 year out of 5.

How about this scenario to make everyone happy.

BIG 10 West
Michigan
Iowa
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Michigan State
Illinois

BIG 10 East
Ohio State
Penn State
Purdue
Indiana
Notre Dame
Northwestern

PAC 10 North
California
Washington
Washington State
Oregon
Oregon State
Boise State

PAC 10 South
USC
UCLA
Arizona
Arizona State
Stanford
Hawaii

BIG EAST West
Louisville
Cincinatti
Pittsburgh
South Florida
Western Kentucky
Central Florida

BIG EAST East
West Virginia
COnnecticut
Syracuse
Rutgers
Navy
Army

Its kinda stretching it in the Big East but there are only so many teams that would have a change at competing and that are somewhat logical logistics wise.

Then since every conference has 12 teams we should have 8 conference games, 2 games where a team plays a team from another BCS conference and then 2 games to scheudle in state "rivals" (aka cup cakes like all teams do). The 2 game against BCS teams one would be on the road and 1 home.

Then you couldnt complain about someone not playing anyone, every team has a shot to prove itself twice against other conferences.

So for instance LSU would play the following schedule

Week 1 - Texas
Week 2 @ Hawaii
Week 3 - Auburn
Week 4 @ Mississippi State
Week 5 @ Vanderbilt
Week 6 @ Alabama
Week 7 - Mississippi
Week 8 - Louisiana Tech
Week 9 - Florida
Week 10 @ Arkansas
Week 11 - South Carolina
Week 12 - Middle Tennesee

Ohio State's would be

Week 1 - Kent State
Week 2 - Mississippi State
Week 3 @ USC
Week 4 - Akron
Week 5 @ Michigan State
Week 6 @ Purdue
Week 7 - Michigan
Week 8 - Notre Dame
Week 9 - Indiana
Week 10 @ Northwestern
Week 11 @ Wisconsin
Week 12 - Penn State

USC

Week 1 - Idaho
Week 2 @ Notre Dame
Week 3 - Ohio State
Week 4 - Wyoming
Week 5 - Boise State
Week 6 @ Californai
Week 7 @ Arizona State
Week 8 - Arizona
Week 9 - Oregon State
Week 10 @ Hawaii
Week 11 - Stanford
Week 12 @ UCLA

You could keep all rivalry games still around like Florida could play Florida State every year and USC would play Notre Dame every year.
