the 5.0 is a 4.6????

so talking to this guy today, he ask is that your 5.0??? i go yea!!!! he goes you know those are really 4.6, thay call them 5.0 cuz it sounds better. i go ok and left lol. so is what he said true? no right? its a 302 which is a 5.0 just like a 351 is a 5.8 and so on even chevy call there 305 5.0 so he was full of ****!

yeah the guy got mixed up, the 302 motor is technically a 4.9l, but ford did "call" it a 5.0 to not mix it up with the 4.9l inline 6 motor offered in the trucks at the time, and yes, to make the mustang seem better. either way, yes the guy has his facts wrong considering he's confusing it with the size of the modern modular motors which are 4.6l...

Yeah, I was kinda wondering what was up with that, myself, when I was looking at a bunch of MPG stats on fueleconomy.gov ... and I kept seeing a 4.9L engine instead of a 5.0L for the Fox Mustangs. Round up to the coolest number, I guess...?

as mentioned before, has to do with the trucks. the 300ci six was closer to being a true 4.9L, and the 302 was supposed to be a step up (even though it really only had about a 1ci advantage over the 300). iirc, real calculated displacement is 300.1 for the six and 300.9? for the 302.

I was told that 304ci was 5.0ltrs. This would mean that the Javelin was actually a 5.0.

The 302 has 301.5936 cubic inches using the NHRA formula for calculating displacement (bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x number of cylinders).

a 302 is 4942 cc. if you have any math skills, this means 4.9. they did it so it wouldn't be confused with the 300 six. much like how a 351 is actually a 352, it's called a 351 so it isn't confused with the completely different 352.

Yep, a bit more detailed:

61.023744

One cubic inch number like 305 isn't the only '5.0'...it can vary due to rounding and the real formula as stated.
