IRS is not important to me. And if it comes with it I would have to take it out. The performance of an IRS is not that much better than a solid rear axle. I used to street race alot and tore IRS cars up in a car 15 years older. If you think IRS is going to make you faster. Then you need practice. I guarantee you, you will do much better to work on your technique instead of blaming it on your suspension. If you really think the IRS will make or break you. Then you should have no problem finding brand new take outs when the Cobra comes out. There everywhere already from the Cobras that came with them. I am glad they finally went to a racing set up with the live axle. It has been way over do.

The 350Z? IRS, goes like h**l!! Blows any Mustang away, straight or curved road... and costs less. My (future) son-in-law has one. Awesome car I wish Detroit would look at!! Correction: I wish Detroit would build something that would go like that!!! I don't care for Asian cars (can't afford the repair bills).... Would have been GREAT if the new Mustang were in that class, but with 2+2 seats. >sigh<

I was SO wishing Ford would build a Mustang for this century. I've always liked Mustangs (well, except for the pentangs of the 70). Guess I'll have to keep waiting. And driving my imported Formula a bit longer - along with the 65 when the weather is good.

Get me what this guys smoken. I searched for the performance fiqures on the 350Z and going buy the best times. I'd say its a drivers race with a GT or Bullit. And the Mach 1 would easily handle a stock one. We don't even need to mention a Cobra for this matchup.

I have had a 65, 67,79,00, and 01. My 67 390 cu in had a horizontal muffler in the back.As far as "retro" yeah I think its a great looking tribute to the old Stangs. The Diminsions of the new stang are within an inch of the 67 it was copied after. The 67 was wider and longer than the 64,65 and 66. If you don't like it, don't buy it. It's final judgement will be by the sales it produces.

Quite an amusing thread. IRS? Not important to me. Plain hood, no side scoops? I am not a big fan of the FAKE scoops on my 02 GT. Too retro? That's what I think of when someone says "Mustang". NOT a Fox body. How come nobody is talking up the new 3 valve cylinder heads with VCT, newly designed front AND rear suspension, bigger brakes (12.4 inch front rotors. Cobra territory.) New two piece drive shaft that will cut down on NVH, newly designed SHIFT LINKAGE for the 3650 TREMEC to satisfy all the current 3650 owners who cry about "grinding" (Adjust your clutch and then push it in before you try to shift! )
Optional 18 inch wheels, hot new stereo system to replace the ageing MACH system, etc.
Worried about exposed mufflers? Ask us Magnaflow catback owners how we wish you could see the polished stainless steel mufflers because they are pretty.
I love my 02GT but that car will be GONE when the 05 goes on sale. Hopefully there will still be some haters so I will have no problem selling it. God Bless Ford and God Bless America.
Oh yeah, for all you IRS guys out there, Ford actually makes a Mustang with it from the factory. It says C-O-B-R-A on the rear fascia. Except in 1999. It still says M-U-S-T-A-N-G on it.
Peace and love.

Amen to that, it's irritating to have to pick through so many posts complaining about things that are NOT ISSUES in the 1st place. Does everybody not understand that the IRS comes in Cobras? Yes, it would be nice in the GT, but you can't have your cake and eat it too. In the GT, if they went IRS, the drag racers would scream bloody murder. They made a gut/business decision, and it was probably the correct one. You want IRS? Start mowing lawns on the weekends to help finance your Cobra piggy bank. And since the new platform was designed to accept both, I'm sure a bolt-in IRS kit will be available and reasonable and not too tough to install. As for style, sales will tell the tale, not a small minority handful of naysayers. In any group of Mustang enthusiasts, you'll have:

* folks who think that all that gawdy, goofy, corvette-summer Cervini crap is actually SHARP, and should be incorporated into production models

* folks who think 3 1/2" exhaust tips on a stock 4.6 or 5.0 looks hot, instead of silly and out of proportion.

* folks who think their Mustang needs to say "Mustang" or "Cobra" on it, in as many places as possible, and will spend endless hours figuring out more places that they can stick decals, emblems, windshield banners, the more the better, as if we wouldn't know what kind of car it was completely naked of any emblem clutter.

* folks who think that every Mustang can look better with a honkin' wing on the back

* folks who basically can't name ONE TOTALLY NEW CAR design that they like, but can name a dozen 3-5 year old designs they love, and have ALWAYS been that way. In other words, they're slow on the up-tick, and can't appreciate good design until it becomes horribly familiar design to them.

You're going to have folks that don't like the same things. I'm not laying this out to say that the anti-'05 crowd has no taste, or vice-versa. That's not my point. I'm laying it out to remind that you've got all types hanging around in any given crowd, and some people like things that others despise. The items I happened to list above, I despise, in MY opinion, which I'm free to express, and others are free to trash. (I'm comfy in knowing that at least I look GOOD cruising down the street, suckers!!! :wink

silly comparison

why some people insist on comparing a Detroit Muscle Car to a Japanese/Renault I'll never know. The new Mustang is incredible

Unfortunately, I think you have overly generous feelings about this car.

He paid $35,000 for the Performance Edition. A New 03 Cobra can be had for less than that. The Cobra would make extremely short work of the 350Z.

Not trying to start anything, but I think you might be mistaken about the 350Z's performance.
Actually, no. He paid $28,500 for a performance edition over a year ago, compared to a Mustang in my dealer's showroom about the same time with NO options other than a spoiler that was over $32K.

When I said "faster than any Mustang" I meant "modern Mustang" and should have said so. I stand corrected on that point.

And in an earlier post, when I compared a Mustang and a Corvette: price is irrelevant to the point of the discussion: They are about the same size, same weight, and precious little difference in horsepower. My point being that IRS certainly doesn't slow the Corvette down, therefore it wouldn't necessarily slow a Mustang down. But after spending time behind the wheel, it makes a HUGE difference in handling and, therefore, safety.

"Huge difference"? I think not, I've had both and I wasn't all that impressed with the IRS. And you are assuming that it's the fact that it's IRS that makes the car handle better. The problem with the current Mustang is NOT the live axle, it's the quadra-bind suspension. With a proper three-link setup, the current live axle will outcorner an IRS Cobra without even trying. I'll wager that the new GT will out-corner any existing Cobra.

Well I agree with the side filler idea!

But one thing that bothers me is the key hole on the fake cap looks like ****e if it is supposed to be a mock cap the least they could have done is make it a cover for the key hole.

See attached ( sorry for the bad photochop rushed)

Yeah that would be a brilliant idea.
Obviously you don't remember the 80's cars that had this brilliant idea...
Go look at any now and see whats missing....

Point taken but also the materials and tech have advanced since then. Surley they could design a cover that will not break. It is a cosmetic issue.

He either got it used or got some good rebates on it. Every dealer I've been to charges MSRP. And on the performance edition. The MSRP is $30,530. Without options and not including delivery charges. Build it yourself and you'll see.
http://www.nissanusa.com/vehicles/Configurator#top
If they wanted over $32k. They were charging way over sticker for it then. Or you were looking at the cobra . And again I provide you with something to back it up.

I have to point out that my 97 is a modern mustang and is more than a match for the Z. The Z while nice for what it is. Is not going to beat ANY modern mustang.

Nope: he bought it new from a Nissan dealer. In fact, bought the first one a town, finding it online after waiting WEEKS in Hotlanta for a new one to be delivered to his local dealer. Then drove 4 hours to be there on Sat morning when they opened so it wouldn't get away. I really don't know what he paid - just what the sticker said, and he said they wouldn't discount. I really don't think he paid a premium. Maybe they started that later.

The Mustang price WAS sticker, and it was not a "Cobra" package. (To an old Mustanger like me, "Cobra" means a Shelby, not anything built by Ford!! So I would have noticed an seeming incongruity like that.) Of course I do know that "sticker" varies by location.

But I'll be glad to see Mustang prices come down. The original was affordable, current ones aren't as affordable, so a reduction is in order if Ford wants to sell them. Of course now they have no competition, since GM decided (for whatever reason) they didn't want to be in that market, so who knows???

Here's a question: Ponycars have, for some unknown reason, gained a reputation as "redneck" cars. I don't know why, I sure don't qualify!! What do you think Ford could do, now that they have the field to themselves, to lessen that reputation???

I can understand if you don't like something, I mean, if we loved it like it was, there wouldn't be much of an aftermarket. But having several threads about not liking it, sheesh, it's pointless. And I could maybe understand if they were kinda relevant, but getting upset because the muffler is showing, or because the Mustang will have a side fuel filler?!?

Hmmm. Didn't notice that. Hopefully it's not on the WRONG side like the current T-Bird and other Ford products. I can understand the Japanese putting the filler on the right, because they drive on the left. But an American car????? The filler belongs on the driver's side, so you're not out in the rain filling it at the gas station, and you drive on the right side of the pumps, just like everything else.

Where do you live? That you get raped on a mustang but bargain basement prices on a Z? I have tried time and time again on the internet and in person. The sticker I have seen constantly is $30k for the Z. That's MSRP without extra pricing. And even if it is a fully loaded gt I can't get any gt to be over $28k MSRP. Without them tacking on market adjustments.
I've tried again.
Base Vehicle: $24,555.00

Colors:
Sonic Blue Met - Ext.
Med Graphite - Int.
Optional Features: $2,765.00

Destination: $625.00
Total MSRP: $27,945.00

Dude, what planet are you on??? "But I'll be glad to see Mustang prices come down" INFLATION. Evey model has gone up in price over time. Sorry but you're not gonna get a friggen Mustang for 14 grand fully loaded. ****, you can barely get a base Focus for that price. The current Mustangs are affordable (I bought brand new one right outta college), it is still known around the market as a car with some of the best bang for the buck. So I have no idea what the hell you mean by reduction is in order if Ford wants to sell them...

...The only thing that needs reduction is this stupid 350z fanboy crap that's flowing on this thread.
