The Journey To Find A Fox. Found A Cobra Instead.

Everyone has already gave good advice already so not much to add. But it does seem there's a big separation from a good car and ragged out POS. Not a whole lot of middle of the road versions but they are out there. Take your time and find a good candidate and don't rush into it. This is a great community here that really wants to help.

That Cobra does look good at $15.
With the ease of sending photos with a phone, I would think you could get a pretty darn good idea before you ever started thinking about a road trip.
If they are not willing to take photos, my guess would be that the car is mis-represented.
Crap, ~15 years ago when i sold my '69 F250 i must have sent 75 or more photos to a gentleman up in Illinois... and phones did not have camera's back then. If the seller is honest, the photos will be provided.

what are your plans with this car? you doing a complete restoration? want turn key ready? do you want it to be a street car, or show car, or drag car or what?
I would like to buy a turn key car, do some mods maybe. Something I don't have to restore, I don't have the time to restore a car. Definitely a street car/show car, I have no desire to race.

I would definitely attempt to find a survivor type car, one that an adult has owned for quite awhile and just drove and maintained, a lot of these cars have been hacked up by well meaning young men who really didn't know what they were doing, and these same kids drove them into utility poles and guard rails.

really continue to do your homework then. find a seller you can trust. take your time. these cars are absolute headaches....if you don't have the time to be restoring something, buying one of these that is already modded, and that you can trust, will cost a little bit. totally worth it in the end.... when you get one that is done right. just wont come cheap. If you don't need the pushrod, I'd look for something that has had a proper coyote swap.... just my opinion.

I bought my 92 the beginning of this year's not knowing a ton about foxes. all I knew was I wanted a factory v8 5 speed car, that was not molested.... I found one, albeit a little rough, and I got it. I've had to replace soooo much :poo:, as it is 25 years old now. it's basically getting a full restoration..... not to mention technology is far outdated in these. heating cooling systems, charging systems, ignition, I could go on and on and on.... oh and the computers are another issue in itself.... these cars were made cheap, the doors, the door lock actuators are a huge problem as well.....

in closing, these vehicles seem to be love/hate for most. they will probably never not have their issues....but, I am enjoying this restoration and I absolutely love my car. fox bodies are the last real classic car in my opinion. whatever you choose, good luck, and I can tell you that you are in the right place because the members here are awesome and will help you out whenever you need it.

I agree with that 100%.... then again thats the foundation for a good restoration, and doesn't seem like he has time for that.....ive never known a fox owner was wasn't constantly under the hood or in a garage fixing something

I have no problem fixing things. Do it all the time on my '66. If it needs new interior, suspension some minor engine work ( I can do engine work, just prefer to do it through the winter) that's fine. The thing I don't want is to do body work. Don't know how to do it and definitely don't have time for it. It's gotta have good paint, I love to detail cars as a hobby (fun cars.. not my wife's car) and good paint is important to me. Hard to find, yes but it's doable.

I all but abandoned the local search up here in New England for a 2nd DD-caliber fox. The cars left are rusted out, POS, 9-owner cars that are badly modified and/or maintained that guys still want $3-4K for. I pretty much gave up after looking at a few. The cars I would drive...well the owners wanted $8-9K+ for.

At that price point, I started looking at 96-98 Cobra convertibles. Even though I drove my Fox in High School, the 97-98 Cobra's were brand new at the time and sitting on the dealer lots while I drooled over them. If I could find a clean 1998 chrome Cobra vert, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I am finding rusted out cars, but I'm sure it's more common for rusted piles on the east coast than on the west coast.

For some reason buying a one owner car would be awesome, but I'm sure pricey.

If yer under the hood a LOT, get rid of that ugly metal stick holding it up and buy a gas shock hood support kit. I'm really pleased with mine, and it's a simple bolt-in. imp
