The Real Deal on the SSI intake

Sorry - lost my head; I was there Nov. 2-6, Tues. thru Sat.

All I can tell you is there were two Stangs there with an intake just like the one in your picture above whiteLX. One was a 96-99 that had a centrifugally supercharged 5.0L transplanted in place of the mod motor - it was in the Electronic/Audio/Video part of the show; the other was a Fox body out in front on the sidewalk displays. The cars inside were pretty much there for the whole show. THe cars outside - some showed up earlier; some showed up later in the week. There were cars that showed up earlier, that were gone later in the week. I only saw the one outside one day.

Did you get a chance to attend too? I was overwhelmed.

to me that looks like a pre-production intake, cos from what i hear they only come out in that darker grey and it dont have the fuel rails

It is a pre-production intake. It was on the BBK race car.

Hi. I have an SSI manifold on a Ford crate engine in a kit cobra. I figured at 350 horse and 2200 lbs. it should move, and I wanted the latest greatest manifold. Unfortunately, what moved was coolant through the manifold in a fissure and leaked out by the #4 cylinder manifold bolt. Also I have to mention the spacing on the fuel rails does not match the spacing on the intake ports so the injectors are not parallel, and they leaked gasoline on the intake manifold. This was after I spent 2 hours grinding casting flash out of intake runners to improve flow.

I contacted John Brockman at BBK who has been very gracious and helpful. I boxed up the manifold and fuel rails to return to BBK, but FedEx has no record of a request to pick it up for a return to BBK.

I have been trying so hard to get this car together and now I am stuck with a manifold that leaks. I have no other recourse than to sue BBK in small claims court.

Looks like this intake isn`t living up to it`s pre-release marketing hype .
I would personally pass on this one,unless "looks" mean more to you than proven solid performance and quality.

Are these BBK intakes made in the USA or China???

Just an update:

John, Bryan and everyone at BBK continued to be concerned and extremly helpful. In the end they had been trying the best to get the manifold back and remedy the situation. It is the folks a FedEx that are incompetent. Thanks to John, Bryan and all those at BBK that stand behind their product and are helpful fixing a situation.

Below are the Dyno results in which 5.0 Magazie found with a stock Cobra with a 5.0 intake and then installed the BBK SSI Intake. They state that the intake added 41 rwhp.

I am adding the intake to my 89 GT in the Spring and am hoping for more than 41 hp with the mods I have on the stang.

There was No point in them putting the BBk out at this point. Too late in the 5.0 game. There is and has been either equivalents or better for some time now.

For superhcharded applications, the holley, saleen/vortech and a host of other oddball intakes would likely do better.
And for NA, there is so many.

IMO it's like someone just getting another cobra R replica rim to the market, too little, too late.
BTW, when the magazines tested it in a NA situation, it was not impressive. I think the RPM outperformed it, and one other.

You forget to mention the car had Eddelbrock heads on it for both intake tests -takes a lot of wind out of the 41HP gain.............it also had a non-stock Comp Cam, like an XE258 or something.

I had a BBK SSI on order since May with Summit. Not a bad price either. $519.00 and a $50 Summit Buck. But I didnt believe the SSI would be the right intake for my street/strip 302 combo. So instead last week I ordered a RPM2 from Brothers Performance store on Ebay. Picked it up for $529 plus shipping.
And after seeing the dyno results in this months 5.0 Im not having any second thoughts about the switch.

And just what did this month's intake test on a 347 have to do with your 302? When tested on a 302 the SSI kept pace with every manifold they tried. In fact, all of the manifolds tested (with the exception of the stock manifold) were so close that it really comes down to price or preference.

Because next March the 302 is coming out and a 331/Vortech combo is going in. Im not bashing the BBK, infact I think it's the best looking intake on the market right now. It's just that I needed a little more "growing" room for my future combo.

Hre is what the magazines NEVER do - give you averages and a graph of the results - very telling...............all the mags ever do is delcare the highest peak number "the winner" when what REALLY matters is the averages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
