The rear seat delete is coming along as planned

I had a few delays, like not being able to find carpet, and not having enough room between the speakers for the port, but it will turn out much cooler because of this. Ill explain in the pics I have so far.

This is the first thing you need to remove.

There are two snaps under the seat part, just find them and push them back and pull the bottom part out. Then unbolt 5 (I think) bolts for the back part.

Now take all the rough measurements and cut out everything. I needed alot more wood than a normal RSD because of the speaker box Im putting on the back.

Then I painted it all black cause Im not carpeting the box (yet) or the bottom of the seat portion. (It will fold up for under seat storage )

Trim everything and make sure it fits right.

Then if you are adding speakers, cut the holes.

Here is where it started getting interesting. I didnt have enough room between the speakers for the port, so I cut this one. Im going to staple a piece of tan fabric that matches the interior. Then My grandfather will cut a Mustang out of a piece of 1/2 in plywood and Im gonna cover than in the same fabric and glue it to the back.

Put speakers in and back part in. Added a piece of tan "pleather" to fill in the hole I decided not to use. It actually looks pretty good.

Cut a running horese out of a piece of 1/4 inch plywood. Then covered it in the same tan "pleather"

The finished product. You can see the seams on the bottom where I decided to keep the side parts down. It works great and you can see the hinge AT ALL.

I dont know what MDF is but I think mine will turn out oretty good. I want it to be loud, but not loud tto where you can hear me coming from a mile away. My exhaust already does that.

MDF= medium density fiberboard
Thats what 99% of speaker enclosures are built from.
Its very strong and seals well.

No need for MDF. As a matter of fact, plywood has a better resonant characteristic for subwoofers than compressed-fiber types like MDF (as long as you use the right thickness). It's just ugly and harder to work with.

Is that shape going to the the port area? If so what Fs are you tuning the port to? Judging by the area of that opening, you will need a port too long to fit in the trunk to get it right. You may want to stick with a couiple 3" x 14" long pipes or something.

I had my first setup like yours with just one 12 with the port facing the trunk. It sounded great.

I thought it was a fun project.

John brought up something I always wondered. I dont know much about acoustics, but it seemed like plywood wouldn't 'absorb' as much of the hit as goo-goo MDF.

:OT John, is your site ever coming back? I still wanted to see more pics of your stereo stuff (particularily the rear deck/package shelf where you did all that stuff)?

i got some black carpeting from Walmart. it comes in a roll about 3 ft wide. i think it was only like $5 or $6.

Try the car audio stores. Thats where I got mine, anf the one I went to had a good bit of colors to pick from. But its $12 a yard and 3 ft wide.

As for the project, well its still not done but the back part with the speakers is in. All I have left it to put the bottom part in. I cut the sides off so they can be flush with the moulding. So I have one part that comes up and there is about 6 inches on each side that will stay down. All I have to do is mount the hinge, and fab up some brakets for the outside peices. I had to scratch the box part cause after doing some thinking and re-thinking, I just couldnt get it to work how I wanted it to. So the triangular hole has a piece of "pleather" that I bought from wal-mart stapled on the back side and its the same color as my seats. So it looks pretty cool. I also cut a running mustang out of a piece of 1/4 in ply wood and Im gonna either wrap that in the pleather (which I doubt) or paint it the color of my car, or silver and mount it under the speakers.

I would post some pics but Im not on my computer. In fact Im on 56k.

go to a fabric store for fabric man, that's the BEST place, they even have mesh to recover speakers with (like the rears in verts)

of course, i know ernan bought a roll of black carpet at Walmart
