So my wifes parents gave us their old rust bucket 91 GMC Safari AWD for me to drive in the winter... We are driving it home (with my fingers crossed that it wouldn't break down) from Michigan to Kansas and I start smelling coolant. I didn't even check it... I said **** it, if it blows, it blows. So we get home ok, but I pressure test it, and it's leaking coolant from the intake gasket on the passanger side. I said screw this thing, I'm not working on it.. take it to a shop... Let her parent pay... Then I thought about it and said screw it... If I'm gunna drive it, I better know the inns and outs. So I ripped the intake off (god damn van piece of **** everything comes out from inside the cab!) So I got everything off without a broken bolt, to my amazment... Going to the parts store tomorrow to get gaskets, vac hose, ect... This thing has NEVER had engine work (tune up, plugs, wires, cap, rotor ANYTHING) so I found a lot of stuff that needs replacement. It should run like a champ after I'm done though.

At least it didn't explode when it saw you with a wrench in your hands.

I had a neighbour some years back with one of those AWD Safari vans.

He couldn`t afford to drive it anymore because of poor gas mileage so he sold it.
It was terrible on gas.

Yeah, well... I used to do this for a living, but I figured to let her parents pay for it and keep my hands clean LOL. But I sucked it up.

And yes... I'm surprised it didn't blow when it saw a wrench too LOL

It doesn't get horrible gas mileage... About 25 on the highway, 17ish in the city. It'll be nice in the winter time with the AWD.

It ran pretty good considering it's never had a tune up. The contacts in the cap were almost dust cause they were so corroded, and there's tons of arc dust in there, too. Should run much better when I'm done with it tomorrow.

Dude, I kid you not, but the other day I saw a Chrysler Minivan (later 90's body) with a CAI sticking out of the hood, all primer black and a fart can muffler.

It was wicked fast! I beat it off the line in my Jeep.

don't forget the fuel filter man, that should help with the gas mileage. Good luck and we had to do the same thing in our van, except we had to take the head off b/c the spark plug hole was stripped. I told my parents if it ever gets totaled I am putting it in my mustang, 5.4 liters of beastly van power lol

4.3 TBI's are super easy to work on. Unless they are in a astro van.

Chevy's aren't any worse than a Ford IMO. They are both ****ty cars/trucks IMO.
