the story behind getting a free 66 vert!

Well it is not that easy, i am getting a project 66 vert 289 3 speed from my wife's grandpa. He was out visiting last month and i was showing hime my 80 jeep cj5 that i finished restoring (i had one in college and loved it so i got another). anyway he told me that he was no longer going to restore his collection of 65 - 66 verts (yeah that is right COLLECTION). in the 80's he snached up about 10-12 65-66 vert v-8 cars.. stored them in his barn on the farm and slowly would restore one every 3- 5 years or so.. then sell them it off and do another.
anyway he seemed pretty impressed with my restoration work on my cj so he said if i wanted one of his vert projects i could come out and get one. You see my wife learned to drive on one of them, and we have both been dropping hints that we would love to restore one... i dont know much about the car, other than it is a 66 vert 289 3 speed car manual top, blue with white top/ interior. like i said it has been in a barn for 20 years but he said it is restorable, i know it has rust so i will be tearing it down to the shell.. and doing this one right.

so i will be taking a trip from Denver CO to Chicago to pick it up. I will be driving a 2002 jeep grand cherokee with the 4.7 v8. my thoughts are getting a u-haul auto transport trailer for a one way trip from chicago to denver. My wife, 10 month daughter and i will take a week to visit and sight see then ****** up the free-stang and head back.. i looked into a dolly but i am relly turned off by the idea other that it is half the price of the trailer.. i keep thinking if i am dollying a convert that has rust (dont know the extent yet) i dont want to be flexing anything or mis-aligning anything for the 15 hour road trip.. plus i think a trailer is much safer for us and the stang..

anyway just thought i would share the excitement. i will keep you all posted!

Because it's from family you're obligated to do it right!

Get the trailer. I belive if the car isn't registered your're not supposed to even have two wheels on the road. You could get a ticket.

How bout a picture of the stang and not the jeep

i wish i had a pic of the stang.. g-pa is not really tech savvy so the only pics i am going to get will be the ones i take when i pick it up.. i am going off memory 5 years ago when i saw it in the barn..

You can't beat that. Obviously getting the vehicle for free makes a big difference from a project funding standpoint. Good luck with the new project. I'm also restoring a family vehicle. My Dad bought it new in 65. I got it for free too. Only, I'm giving mine back to my Dad when I'm done

I would not even consider a dolly. Aside from the condition of the unibody and traffic laws, you have to be concerned about the condition of the axle, bearings, tires, etc. May be okay to go across town but not from Chicago to Denver.

yeah, been a member for a while, mostly a lurker, since i had a 63 falcon with a 260 4 speed, only some of the tech crossed over.

i will be starting a thread once i get my hands on it.

You are going to have to lie to the Uhaul people to use the trailer behind your Grand Cherokee. They aren't going to want to let you use the trailer behind the GC due to their weight restrictions.

I just hauled a 28 foot trailer full of furniture behind our GC and it did great, but they wouldn't give me a trailer to tow a small car. I had to use the dolly. If I were doing it again I would tell them that I was going to use a F250 to do the actual towing.

huh.. maybe i can tell them that i am just picking up the trailer with the G.C i checked on the u-haul website and it said it was a match.. we shall see, maybe i can borrow my friends flatbed.. the only bad thing is i would have to drag it out and back..

***update***

Well as the trip continues to creep up i am getting even more excited to get my new mustang. i have most of the details ironed out, i will be borrowing a 16' dual axel car trailer with a dove tail towed behind an 04 jeep grand cherokee v8. i have all the trailer brake wireing connected and have reviewed the weights.. I got a photo from my wife's g-pa that blew me away! sooo i had to share with stangnet!

anyway i think the old timer has his mustangs mixed up as he was originally telling my my car was a 66, but as you can see sure looks like a 65. anyway he said this one has been stored since the early 80's and was a daily driver before he parked it.. Grandpa was taking 2 of the tires into town to get them repaired since they would leak down after a few hours.. (trailer transport only).

all i can say is WOW the mustang appears to be all original (except paint and top) the underdash wifing is all complete and not hacked. the mustang also appears to have the original 289.

did i mention this is 1,000 times more complete and restorable than what i was expecting to get?:Zip2:

thanks guys,

as far as i know he only has 2 other verts still, 1 is a pretty rusted 65 6cyl parts car and a complete 68 vert.. i know he is selling off the 68, i will see what he wants for it.. if i can i am going to try to snag the 65 6cyl car too in the near future.
