Sometimes all you need to do is turn around... The answer to the timing chain cover was right beside me the entire time. All I had to do was look at it lol. This is my 1965 289.

After this no more timing chain cover talk from me. I have one I'm going to use it. It appears to be what came on these cars from what I can tell. My old 289 seems to be setup the same way. It really doesn't make sense, but I'm sure I'm missing something. The covers that have the ports pointing in the opposite direction don't appear to have all the necessary bolt holes to correctly attach a fox pump. The 94, 95 water pumps were apparently different. If someone finds a picture they have of there car with the water pump off and it looks different from mine I'd love to see it. Also, the factory put a lug on the cover to attach the bracket for the starter wire and to attach the ground wire. If I find a convenient place to move those to the block I'll do it otherwise I'm not going to loose sleep over it.

Things to do.
1. Fix leaky timing chain cover.
2. Clean up and paint the new fan shroud. What do you guys think about that? leave it alone. Paint it. If I paint it just use trim black?
3. Put everything back together.
4. Fix the temperature cable on the heat/AC box. It apparently got pinched when I reinstalled it.
5. Fix the dash lights. They just stopped working. Not sure what the issue is there.
6. Fix the drivers side window.
7. Take it to the shop to get the subframes welded in and the torque box reinforcements welded up.
8. Have the tailpipes fixed and welded back on.
9. Bring it home and reinstall the interior.
10. Get the AC working.
11. Get the nasty tint on the windows replaced.
12. Drive the crap out of it!

I'm sure I forgot something. And thanks to everyone for the interesting conversation about timing chain covers and water pumps! LOL

I read in a thread a while back of someone finding a oil pan drain plug gasket that worked really well. Does anyone following this recall what they were? I need to get some.

You didnt miss anything. It was a while back, in I cant remember who's thread, that leakey oil drain plugs came up. Somebody chimed in about a gasket that they found on Amazon that worked really well. Currently my car has plugs but no gaskets. I figured if someone had found some they really liked I might as well give them a try. That's all. If nobody remembers I'll just pickup some at the auto parts store.

That was me. I bought an assorted set at Auto Zone. The copper one seemed to work the best, although after sitting for a few months, I’m starting to get a drip again. I’m sure my pan is the issue, but again, the copper held for quite a while. Hoping I can tighten it, along with motor getting hot, it will seal up again.

The secret to a good seal on the drain plug (now don't tell anybody) is the washer, either plastic or copper has to fit tight to the threads, when tightened down the washer should crush a very small amount to seal at the threads. I learned this with the dump truck, at 600k can you imagine how many oil changes?

New washer every couple of changes? This is the first car I’ve needed a washer to keep my plug from leaking.

Is it the rear drain plug leaking? You might want to check the low oil sensor on the drivers side of the pan. Mine was leaking through the sensor, running down to the rear drain plug, making it look the source of the leak. I replaced my sensor with a drain plug, a fender washer and sensor gasket, and haven't had any leaks since.

As for the drain plug gaskets, I have been using the blue plastic ones from the parts store, size M14. They come in 3 packs.

You don't need to change them that often, just when they start to leak, I've put maybe a half dozen on the truck, 6 times in 23 years and 600k changing the oil every 7k. Even without a gonculator that is not that often.

Awesome. Thanks for the responses. As for the oil sensor. I'm pretty sure my car doesn't have one. If I remember correctly the pan has been swapped and doesn't even have a spot of it. You make a good point though and I'll double check it this evening. I might pick up some of those M14s next time I'm at the parts store and see how they work. If it still leaks I'll get some copper ones or the crush type. It doesn't bad I just figure I might as well put some on.

Wish the best of luck with your leaks, I know how aggravating they can be. The last dealership I was a mechanic at (MANY moons ago!), I got the unenviable job of being the leak specialist. We sold three separate makes of cars but no matter what make, what was leaking or from where, it was my job to find it and fix it yeahhhhh...not!

I didn't get to do anything to the car this weekend. Yesterday my little man got into the coals left over from a fire the night before. I felt so bad for him. It wasn't a fun afternoon/evening for anyone.

He also has a burn on his heel. He's doing good this morning, but we are keeping him out of daycare for a day or two so he doesn't have to put shoes on.

Actually he had been running around all day getting in and out of the pool. So no he wasn't wearing shoes. He'll have a new found respect for fire after this.
