There aren't many things to like about a 4.6 ( especially a 2v 4.6)

What I chose to sink into it and what I could have put into it are two different things. The engine was built to handle well over 650hp. The blower I ended up going with barely put out a little more than half of that. With a more capable blower, it would have been an easy 500-600hp capable engine....and that's through factory heads!

The car was a fully loaded, full weight Mercury Cougar XR7 with working A/C and all the bells and whistles. I ran mid-12's with 3.27’s, through an IRS rear end and power sucking 4R70W and a curb weight of nearly 4,100lbs with driver. It was also making 360lbs/ft of torque at 1,800RPM.

Little more than cleaned up PI heads and 9psi through a teeny tiny 90ci 3rd Gen Eaton supercharger. Stock block, stock cams, stock displacement. The engine would have propelled a Mustang easily into the 11's just the way it sat and still knocked off mid/high 20's on the highway.

I wouldn’t havea hope in hell of running those times, or making that kind of power with a 5.0L OHV with little more than cleaned up E7TE’s and an equivalent amound of airflow being pumped into it...and the Mustang weights almost 800lbs less.

To discount the 2V 4.6L because they didn't make a lot of power in stock trim is silly. Especially since the ones giving them the thumbs down, are the same ones who continue to drool all over the 5.0L OHV. The same 5.0L OHV that made a full 35hp less than the 4.6L they're thumbing their noses at. :shrug:

I'm not discounting the 4.6L because of the power it makes in stock trim. I'm discounting it for being short on displacement and long on complexity and price.

+1.... Bolt on parts for pushrod engines are stupid cheap. Boost on mod motors is more cost effective IMO. For what it costs to buy cams, heads, etc, etc you can buy a blower and go.

I guess it all depends on what you're used to. You'll spend as much on a H/C/I 5.0L OHV as you would on a blower only 4.6L SOHC...and you may still fall short of the modular power and torque numbers and will most certainly fall short in the drivability and efficiency dept. On the other hand, a blower only 5.0L OHV in most cases barely eclipses the 300hp mark...a feat that could easily be accomplished with bolt ons with the 4.6L.

It's not quite such a cut and dry comparison. The OHV is easier and cheaper to modify argument only seems to carry weight at certain power levels. I'd say they're about 50/50 at trading off "what does it better and when" for the most part.

While I'll agree it's not so cut and dry, you'll have to admit most mod motors use pd blowers, whereas most of the time you'll find a centri on a pushrod motor, which is tons more efficient. And I'm quite sure the statement about not finding blown pushrod mills that top 300hp is incorrect to say the least. The bottom of the line S trim v3 vortech will give you 360 on mild boost. Pulley it up for more... An si trim is enough to get you in trouble, and a ysi will split the block. My main complaint with a pushrod engine (they are all overhead valve) is the weak point of the block at + - 500hp. Enter the dart block.

Get somebody to give each of us 10k for a build and I'll KILL a mod motor with a windsor all day long..

I don't deny that centri's on an OHV can make some great power. I was just doing an even comparison between the two.

A blower only PI mod motor will easily make 370-380rwhp and like amounts of torque at modest boost levels (8-9psi). Whether it's a Centrifugal or Positive Displacement blower.

A blower only 302 OHV under these same conditions, won't. Those stock ET7E head and intake really choke them up. Most blower only 302's I've seen are running around the 280-310rwhp range. Change their heads and intake and sure....they're running right up there with the modular crowd and perhaps even more so depending on the heads and intake they're running with...but this adds to the overall cash outlay, which kinda hurts the "cost effency" argument for the OHV crowd. :shrug:

Sure, the small displacement hurts the SOHC from a N/A standpoint, but their highly efficient top ends and valve train allow them to carry those stock components a lot further than you could an OHV once a power adder is introduced into the mix.

Go head to head with basic bolt ons and the SOHC trounces the 5.0L OHV. +1 for the SOHC

Go with H/C/I and the 5.0L OHV makes up the difference and then some...but not without laying out a significant amount of cash in the process. Advantage...DRAW.

Add some displacement to the mix and the 5.0L OHV takes a big leap forward. +1 302 OHV..which at this point is now a 331...347....363, etc. The SOHC can't compete

Start this same grudge match from the beginning, but with power adders from the get go, where the advantage falls in the SOHC's favor and the results are reversed. +1 SOHC

Now, regardless of the method of making power...push them beyond the 400-450hp range and you're going to start running into issues with the modular spitting out it's rotating assembly, so it needs to be upgraded. +1 for the 302 OHV

Push them harder still into the 500-550hp+ ranges and you're not only going to need to upgrade the internal components of the OHV...but the block too. +1...or+2 depending on how you look at it for the SOHC.

Like I said...it’s a real back and forth with these two engines. Ones not necessarily better than the other...just different. :shrug:

...and 10K won't get you as far as you think it will with either engine. ;)

This guy also did something similar to run 11s. After he accomplished that, he took it a step further and ran 10s with asinine levels of boost and meth.

There are lots of examples out there of stock 5.0s with superchargers running very fast. The problem with arguing about what engine is better with boost in the equation though, is that it's a 'tard fight. Pretty much anything can be fast with forced induction, just ask John Huber and his 8-second 2.3L.

I didn't say it couldn't be fast....said the majority of them with moderate boost levels were only making somewhere in the 300rwhp range. Running 11's with 300RWHP is certainly possible....especially if you strip the A/C, Power Steering, firewall, etc like this guy did. What that article doesn't tell you, is how much boost he was running when he did run the 11's. I guarantee you it was more than the paltry, street friendly 8-9psi I described above.

What it also doesn't go into detail about, is the other $2,200 in additional performance parts he added to the car in order to run those times. So much for the "blower only stock 302" claim. C'mon dude...we all know these puffy magazine pieces only ever tell you half the story. ;)

He then pushed the S-Trim well beyond its limits, maxed out the water meth and got into the 10's on a weight reduced coupe that he turned into a ticking time bomb. Am I supposed to be blown away by this? I'll be blown away if the engine lives more than 15K. What is it they say about the candle that burns the brightest? :shrug:

My point was, that it doesn't matter how much airflow you want to throw at a stock 5.0L HO, the stock 4.6L PI will always make more power under the same conditions. Modulars thrive on forced induction. Tard fight, or not...that's the way it is.

We can go dollar for dollar, round after round and pound for pound on this all day if you wish, but neither one of us is going to come up with a clear concise winner from any performance standpoint. Both engines suck in stock trim and both can be great performers with a little effort.

You should see under the intake manifold of a Big Block Buick (400-455) and you will see why the Big Block Buick is only 25 lbs heavier than a small block Chevy and 100 lbs lighter than a Big Block Chevy! So Ford is not the only one who has a TON of space between the V/C's and under the intake.
