Thinking of getting a 4.6 how reliable are the mod motors?

I currently have an 87' GT and I just sold my '93 2.3 daily driver. I am thinking of getting an '02-'04 GT. I really don't know much of anything about the 4.6 cars. I know mods are more expensive for the 4.6 vs. the 5.0, but i'm not planning to mod it any, i'm just looking for a good Daily Driver. Most of the cars I have looked at have around 30-40K on them, I know it isn't uncommon for a well maintained 5.0 to last 200K before the internals are worn out. What about the 4.6? Just as reliable?

Any common problems on them to watch out for?

There have been patrol cars that come into shops with 200K miles on them and have never even had the cam covers off. When it comes to reliable, the mod engines shine.

do bad engines really exsist?

ohhh yeah, just look at the engine in some of the new Toyotas.

What about the automatic trannys, are they pretty reliable? What year did they go from the AODE to the 4R70W?

Dunno about the auto's, but there's a big long thread on here somewhere about the manual transmissions having some issues. The engine may last forever, but the tranny will not.

The 4r70w is a lot better tranny than the AODE but not for racing.

the issues with the manuals are primarily drivers fault. I have never had an issue with mine and there are plenty of others that are running into the 11s with the stock tranny.

I was thinking more of the 1-2 gear clashing, etc. Not sure I see how that is drivers fault.
