Third brake light on convertible

Don't know why changing a bulb on an '89 convertible can be so hard. The red lens does not come off. It can be moved only slightly with the screws out. This is the method I assume was the solution -- am I missing something? I don't want to force it.

Chiltons manual says to remove the luggage rack to remove the light assembly, but the luggage bar/spoiler is attached to the assembly and won't come off. How could something so common be so frustrating? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

same thing happened to my 3rd brake light. the bulbs in it are too big, and they heated up the brake light itself and actually melted it. i had to pry like mad to get mine out. get smaller bulbs!
