This isn't how a thermostat should look after boiling in water...is it?

My GT was overheating and the suspect part was a new Mr.Gasket 180*F balanced thermostat. Since Mr. G is a well-recognized brand, so out of curiosity I dumped it in boiling water for 5 mins. to see if my unit was bad...I think it is...it looks exactly as it did in normal temperature...on the right is a picture of what I think it should look like.

100*C = 212*F ....so Mr.Gasket should be open correct? ...or should I have added some olive oil, some broccoli, and a pinch of salt?

my mr gasket didn't look like that. , Did the copper piece on the bottom always stuck out that far.


If you want to get the water hotter add alot of salt! Salt water boils at higher temp.

I remeber boiling my Mr. Gasket.

It looked the same as when I put it in. So I installed it so see what it did and Ive had no problems.

..yep. This thing was in my car for about 2 hours of driving time...but car was overheating so I took it out and the car was alright....circulation to radiator was very poor with the stat in. If it doesnt open at boiling temp then I dont see how it would while in the car ...the coolant pressure would not help ether

That's what I thought at first too but I think that is the boiling water. But it does look like ice though.

Is the TS on the right the same as the one on the left - they look different (top part). I'd purchase another TS. I never used the Mr. Gasket TS. I've always used the Stant TS and have not had any issues. I've heard that Mr. Gasket is top notch though.

Should it not take a little bit before the wax inside the actuator builds up temperature and then opens up?

I had no problems with my Mr. Gasket.

Because it was problematic, I might contact Mr Gasket.

Savvy companies actually like to hear stuff like this and they might ask you to send them the t-stat for a forensic work-up.

I also have the same t'stat and mine looks like the one on the right when it's open, so yours is definitely faulty 'cause it barely opens at all.
