I went out the other nite, and my friend in his 99' Accord V6 went to pass me, and we were on a really secluded road so i figgured "wut the heck, i'll give him a run" but surprisingly, when i mashed it, he kept up almost the whole way. I noticed that once my RPMs go over about 4500, u dont really feel very much acceleration, and it kinda dies... is that normal? or do I need a tune-up or something?

that's not normal man. I'm not bragging by any means, but I SMOKED an accord (looked like a newer one) the other night in my STOCK LX 5.0 w/ flows...not the GT. He reved at me when we were side by side, I left him and stopped at a light and it turned green, he rolled through , I mashed it, spun 1st, hit 2nd, hooked up and flew past him. Just trying to illustrate the point that you should have beaten him easily, I believe.

To keep this tech, check your wires and make sure they aren't all trashed or arcing to the headers. You may want to do a full cap/rotor/plugs/wires tune-up if you haven't recently.

I have that type of thing also... once you get over 5 grand, it's not really pulling anymore... mostly stock engine with headers, no cats, and flows, k&n filter...

yeah, its a T5, all stock engine w/ K&N filter... There are Yellow 8mm wires on there, i dont know how new... maybe i'll go pick up a gapper and check the plugs and rotor etc. I was kinda dissapointed because he was sticking with me so much... i couldnt believe it. I should be able to see the sparks from wires arcing to the heads rite?? maybe i'll check that out tomorrow for a possible suspect.

ok.. looking up specs on that car,

it weighs 3200 lbs.
it has 200 hp and 195 lb ft.

your car is basically stock, and 14 years old (probably not running as well as the engines ford tested to 225hp/300lbft.)

not knocking our cars or anything, but it shouldn't be THAT shocking to you.

You might need a tune up and even if you don't it doesn't hurt to have it done.

Ok, if he was passing you, then he had a ton of momentum on you that yu have to make up before you can pull on him. If it was from a stop, you most likely would do sooo much better. He had a major jump, and I bet you were not ready and in gear, so that takes time as well. If you stopped him from passing, then you are the faster car. Period.
What happen sounds about right.
Oh, and I bet the stock cats are junk, and killing your power. Put some high flow cats on there. And you only need two, so you can ditch two of the ones you have. The easiest way would be to get a catted h-pipe.

yea, proxses has a good point cuz my friend has a 92 civic hatchback thats totally tricked out ricer style (intake & exhaust, rest stock lol) and i take him off the line bigtime and from a roll bigtime but when hes behind me and starts to pass and i gun it then it takes a WHILE for me to catch up and then pull ahead so if you were both stopped completely u wouldve taken him.

plus, its a new car with new technology AND its a 4-cyl weight car with a V6 so its got a bit of an advantage.

not to hijack this 747 or anything, but proxses, did ford start the quad-cat exhaust thing in 86 or 87 or something, and that is why headers/catback for an 86/87+ wont work on the older foxbodies, right?? thanks

Hmmm
That I'm not sure about. I seem to remember hearing that the older cars (pre86) had a dual to single and back to dual exhaust. So they have a y-pipe instead of the h-pipe. Which is why a new h-pipe with cats would need to be modified to fit. But I'm not positive that it's like this.
The best thing to do is look under the car to see how the exhaust is routed.

EXACTLY.

You guys need to realize, a mostly stock 5.0 is nothing fast by any means. Anyone who thinks it is needs to wake up. Until you get into having some decent mods AND a power adder your nothing special. My poor car is slower than most of the new sports cars comming out and its supercharged. Ya know, back in the day the 5.0 might have been blessed but the way these new cars are comming out...some need to wake up and realize. With that being said, get a good tune up and start some mods.

yea, i have looked and its got exhaust manifolds into a ypipe into one cat then just a single all the way back and then at the tip it splits into two pipes for the last foot or so. i was just wondering trivially if the quad cat is the reason why u gotta have different exhaust for pre-86 cars, thanks

92greengt - ur not serious about ur truck bein faster are you? cuz i beat the **** outta my dads 01 ranger 4.0L v6

No, im not being serious. My Ranger might have a K&N but its not going to beat my supercharged 5.0. Its a close race becuase the Ranger has a K&N.

Don't knock Rangers. Not all of them are slow.
Then again, mine's not fast enough for me yet.
Maybe after the blower.

And you need a different exhaust for pre 86 stangs because they don't have the hangers for the h-pipe setup. Although you could always have them added on.
