Having a 66 FB restored by someone and was wondering if I could get thoughts on a few trani's and gears.

Trani choices limited to:
- Tremec 3550 (1st thought)
- Tremec TKO600
- Tremec 3650
- T5

Will have 5.0L in 66 with posi. Just street, spirited enjoyable driving.

What ratios? Can you explain to a novice?

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Ron

The 3550 is a stronger transmission, but not knowing exactly your exact combination (hp, gears...), I would recommend the T-5. Do a search on Tremec 3550. You will find many discussions on the need to cut the tunnel to get them to fit. You will not find them for the T-5. I had to cut the tunnel on mine to get the 3550 to fit correctly.

I am with John. The T-5 will work just fine. It gets a lot of bad press but no problems here even with track use.

And yes, John...........you have a very nice web site!

I believe the 3650 only bolts up to the Mod motor. To my knowledge, no bellhousing in available to adapt the 3650 to the SBF. Also, do a search in the late model area on 3650 and you may not want one.

From the sounds of it, it doesn't sound like you will be putting out a lot of power. If that is the case go with the T-5. But if you are gona put out a lot of HP, I would suggest a liberty T-5. Its the same case as a t-5 so no trans tunnel mods are needed and you the strength you would get from a tremec. Also Rustang is right the 3650 is for a mod motor and you don't what that peice of junk in your car.

86t-top is right. If you don't plan on a ton of HP, then just use a t5. The install is way easier. Tremec is a great trans, but it's a pain to install it. Trust me I just did it on my 65!

mdjay,

I'm looking for between 300-350 hp. Any idea if T-5 is rated for that rate? Again, I'm a novice in this area.

I think the T5 is getting a bad rep, there are many guys up here that are running 11's on stock T5's that seem to have no problem taking the abuse, I don't think the 3550 is worth the trouble in your case.

Goal being 300-350 hp, there will be no better time to put a proper trani in the car. Especially if any fab work needs to be done. I've been told that the T-5 will not support that hp. Now maybe this is just not true and a T-5 will do just fine for street at 350hp. I've also been told of strength issues by people I know and again may not be true - I do like to run the gears hard. Now I cannot see me building the engine up over 350 - heck cops in Connecticut will have me on speed dial. But on the other hand, I do want to think about resale value, who knows.

Thanks,
Ron

Any specific T-5 years I should watch out for?

I heard tq varies substantially throughout the years (230 to over 300 tq).

And what about this "Word Class" versus non-World Class versus just what it was named. Huh?

Any years I should stay away from?

- Crossmember needed?

--------------------------

Great68, Vancouver huh? I was up there 2 years ago. Awsome place. Lions gate bridge kinda freaked me out - in Connecticut (US), traffic lanes don't change depending on time of day. Got my car towed in one of those "you can only park here for 2 hour" areas. Can't beat the weather!

I put a Richmond 5 speed in my 67 fastback.

I'm not going to talk bad about Tremec. But, I will advise you to stay away from the 3650. My daily driver is a 2003 Mach 1. The tranny is not the best.

If you use a Richmond 6 speed, do you have the issue of the driveline angle being a few degrees out like you do with a T5? Do you have to cut the trans-tunnel to fit a Richmond?

I agree with the others on the t5. Not sure what years to look out for but I'm sure the newer the better!

Nope! They fit just fine. I had to do some clearancing (grinding, not cutting or removing) of the tunnel cross member. The shifter hole had to be modified slightly. You can check out my swap page on my website. I will be adding some content to it in a week or so, but this has most of it.

Here is what I mean by "clearancing". This is all I had to grind to clear the shift rods.

Thanks for the info gp, I'm really looking into swapping out my C4 for something stick, But I hate cutting too much. I'm starting to find the Auto is getting really boring.

Trust gp on this one. Not a day goes by I don't wish I had known about the Richmond.
