Throttle moving by itself.

I took my car out for the first time in eleven months. I was deployed oversees with the army before that. Well I did a whole tune up on it which included cleaning the MAF, changing the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and the PCV.

I went for a "test drive" and all of a sudden the gas was floored without my help. I tried to lift the gas pedal to see if it was stuck and it wasn't. I put it in Neutral and it revved itself to 5,000RPMs and I couldn't stop it. So all I did was shut off the car and when it rolled to a stop I popped open the hood. I didn't see anything there was nothing in the way of the throttle cables. So I shut the hood and all was fine. Later I was at home and I was letting it idle and it started to "rev up" all on its own. I wasn't even in the car. So I shut it down and looked for something out of the ordinary but found nothing. Anybody got any ideas?

I would suggest removing the cruise control throttle cable on the side of your throttle body. Just let it hang there. It sounds like it engaged and was pulling on the throtte body just like your gas pedal is supposed to do. Also I would lube the spring on the side if the throttle body.

It could be the cruise control even though it happened while I was out of the car and it was left alone idleing? I really don't know what it could be I am just baffled.

Look for maybe a vaccum leak around where you removed the breather for the Maf and see if the pcv valve hose is connected correctly. Any unmetered air entering the engine could cause this, or it could be something in the cruise.

THe spring could be bad if the TB stays open after you floor it or press the gas pedal, so its not that. And it started reving while you were out of the car upto 5 grand. The motor or a vaccum leak couldent do that. If it was a vaccum leak that big the motor would lean out like crazy and die. I would have to agree, logically it sounds like electrical gremlins with the cruise control. Like mentioned earlier pop off the plastic end of the CC cable from the TB and drive around like that. It wont hurt anything and if it stops revving thats your problem. Now as far as fixing the cruise control, I would have no idea as to how to do that.

How much is one of those springs brand new? Mine was pretty rusted. Can I buy it at Autozone?

If you remove the spring and you soak in naval jelly, you will watch the rust disappear. It is availible in the body part repair section at most parts stores.

I just thought of something. If it was the spring next to the TB sticking open, then wouldn't the pedal stick to the floor? The reason I'm asking is when my car started giving itself throttle, I checked to see if the pedal was stuck to the floor but it wasn't.
